"BP's statement Thursday repeated earlier acknowledgments that it had promoted the transfer agreement to protect a $900 million offshore oil-and-gas exploration deal off Libya's Mediterranean coast. The British justice minister at the time, Jack Straw, admitted shortly after al-Megrahi was repatriated and freed that the BP deal was a consideration in the government's review of his case."

This is going to be a bigger problem than the oil spil.

British Company.
British Government.
Libyan Government.
Scottish Parliament.

Involvement of US government = sod all.

If we are going to start looking for dodgy government policies involving oil is the White House and the US going to come up smelling of roses?

What would happen if I type "halliburton lobbying" into google??

Large company lobbies government to further its interests shocker. This is only a story because some politicians are trying to raise their own profile and BP are a convenient target.

That isn't what BP said, the prisoner swap was at a different time to Lockerbie Bomber.

Eh? The prisoner swap debacle centred around whether they were going to name those being swapped and specifically whether Magrhai was going to be one of those named.

No BP put pressure on a prisoner swap that went ahead with Libya and British Government.

There were no names given.

The leaked emails do not discuss any prisoner exchange or anything.

Saif Gadaffi has always insisted that negotiation over the release of Megrahi was linked with BP oil deals. In essence, the business will for the oil was there but the political will (ie arguments over 'swapping' British and Libyan prisoners, and whether Magrahi was to be specifically named) was stalling matters.

Sir Richard Dalton, a former British ambassador to Libya and a board member of the Libyan British Business Council, said: “Nobody doubted Libya wanted BP and BP was confident its commitment would go through. But the timing of the final authority to spend real money was dependent on politics.”

I think it was shown back when the leaked emails came out, that the timings were off for the deal.

It was 6 weeks between Straw's written climb-down that no prisoners were to be named (in other words, Megrahi wasn't to be specifically named as being excluded from the swap) and the BP deal being ratified. The two things are inextricably linked.

I shall step back then.

Many Americans died in that act of terror, I think that makes it our business as well.

Not if it happens outside your jurisdiction (which contrary to popular belief isn't global).

Innocence is highly debatable.

Guilt is beyond reasonable doubt.

That does not preclude one's legitimate interest in the case.

Because it was a miscarriage of justice. Mainly.
