The BBC News website has had a makeover

I preferred the old version as it had basically everything in one window.. now you have to scroll about and click on things.

I prefer the old one too. For some reason I find this new one harder to read, even though the text is bigger?!

Though as is normally the way with site redesigns, I'm sure we'll all be used to it in a week or so.

I think it's less cluttered.

Whilst its less cluttered, it now takes considerably more scrolling to get around the info on display. The previous version was clearer, this now looks more like the Daily Mail.

Definitely not an improvement.

It's a disaster, it looks like Fox or CNN or similar, just far too busy. Horrible frown

Don't like it here either, I always thought the advantage if the beeb's news site over alot of the other major ones was that it was so easy to read.

Apparently it has 'more whitespace' and 'global visual language'. So who can argue with that then.

Try it on a 24" monitor, it looks The Sun newspaper frown

Compare it to a 2003 page and it looks terribly dumbed down.

A comparison of the world in general, really.

I like it but its missing the ability to personalise the page by dragging the bits you actually want to the top, I guess that would be a bit to intensive for lower spec PCs.

It's ok once you have hit the 'customise this page' tab - but how many people can bothered?

Edited to add:
It seems like it only customises the home page, as soon as you click away from it, it resumes to looking like a red top...

Sadly this appears to be very true. The BBC's TV news seems very dumbed down these days.

confused Silverlight doesn't "look like" anything, anymore than HTML does. It's just a delivery mechanism. It's actually XHTML 1.0 with css.

They seem to have spaced everything out more, and in the process make it appear more cluttered. Still not as bad as the horror that is sky's website though, but getting there.

Indeed.

Aren't they (BBC) going through a period of 'poverty' at the moment (with talks of radio station closures, web budgets halfed etc).

"We've got no money - what can we do?"
"I know. Why don't we spend £,000s redeveloping the website?"
"But it works fine at the moment, and we don't have any complaint"
"Doesn't matter - lets do it anyway..."
