Weird One - Putting a tree indoors???

Hi,
I'm currently helping a friend spruce up a restaurant he's taken over the lease on and one thing we discussed was putting a tree indoors. Not necessairily a real living tree, but even something that has a trunk with branches and no leaves would do. Just somewhere we could hang some lights off for effect.
Any ideas would be appreciated. We're not looking to spend a lot so considered just chopping one down and spraying it with bug killer, but would this be sufficient in killing off all the bugs etc. An alternative was to look at artificial trees, but they cost an arm and a leg.
