I was having a muse about why my fridge is rammed full of jars and I wondered what other people do. My SWMBO (and her family) put loads of stuff in the fridge that I wouldn't, which is where our jam habit comes from I suspect.
Eggs - Nope
Tomatoes - Nope, although SWMBO keeps putting them in so they're cold and bland when I want to eat one
Potatoes - Nope
Bread - Nope
Butter - If it's warm.
Milk - Yep
Jam - Yep, but it's a preserve, so I don't know why.
French dressing - Nope, I did but I don't keep the ingredients (except mustard, but see below) in the fridge, so why put dressing in. Particularly as it made the oil cloudy and immiscible.
Mustard - Yes, but why?
Tommy K - Yes, but it's a preserve, no?

Eggs - Yes. Fridges have egg trays after all!
Tomatoes - Yes. Does mean they keep longer, but I agree you have to take them out early for flavour.
Potatoes - No, that's just silly.
Bread - No. Also silly. People must have humungous fridges to have space for stuff like that!
Butter - Yes, for storage, but not once I start using a block, then it goes in the butter dish outside the fridge.
Milk - Yes, obviously.
Jam - No. But then, I don't usually have jam.
French dressing - No.
Mustard - No.
Tomato ketchup - No. It's a condiment!

Eggs - Nope, cold makes the pores larger, more air so they go off quicker
Tomatoes - Nope, sugars breakdown quicker, they go tart and go off quicker
Potatoes - Behave, they go in the potato trug thing.
Bread - Breadcrock
Butter - 50/50 some goes in the butter dish, remainder in fridge
Milk - Yes, obviously.
Jam - No. Its a preserve
French dressing - Why would I have this?
Mustard - No.
Tomato ketchup - No.

Its *always* humid here so pretty much everything not in a can, or sealed in some way goes in the Fridge otherwise it goes off, really off, very quickly !
Generally the fridge has
Milk,
Salt & Pepper
Oxo Cubes
Jam
Ketchup
Pasta
Salad Dressings
Opened Bags of crisps
Dairy stuff (Cheese etc)
Processed & Cooked Meats
Cereal
Beers
Butter/Spread
Coke
Fruit
Orange Juice
Veg
Salad
Sugar
Bread goes in the Freezer and is used when needed, goes moldy in about 2 days if left out.

Keeping potatoes in the fridge is a heinous sin - they go sweet and soggy. Onions too. Unfortunately most will have been in chilled storage at some point by the time you buy them.
I think most people nowadays overheat their homes to the extent that the only 'cool place' for food storage is a mahoosive larder-style fridge which they shove everything in.

Um, given that I live in a single bed apartment with an open plan kitchen (and storage/utility room in the direct vicinity of the kitchen which is mostly even hotter than the living or the bedroom - at least one can open windows there) where do you suggest a 'cool place' for food would be in the current temperatures?

If its in the fridge in the supermarket, I put it in the fridge. If not, I dont.
What if it states "refridgerate after opening" on the bottle, tin, etc? What sort of stuff are you supposed to refrigerate after opening anyway? Cant think of anything off the top if my head.

A cold fridge turns the Starch to Sugars hence the sweetening, causes no end of problems discoulouring chips & the like as the sugars burn.
