Looking for a reasonable walkabout lens for a Canon body.

Budget around £200ish and happy to buy 2nd hand.

Recommendations?

ETA a good buy?

I have just bought a Sigma 17-70mm albeit the newer image stabilised version and am very impressed by it. They are known for being sharp and I went for one as they have a better range over the kit lenses and wider maximum apertures although not fixed.

Mine was £283 new but I doubt you will find any 2nd hand as they have only recently come out. The newer version also has optical stabilisation, a faster focussing motor and slightly better apertures (f2.8-4 as opposed to 4.5).

I'm not sure what other lenses are in your price range, there are the Sigma 17-50 and 18-50 f2.8s or things like the Canon 17-85 and 28-135 but these didn't tick all of my boxes and I think are more expensive!

IMHO, that is over priced. Look around, especially on TP.

I've got a Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM Lens that I don't use if it's any good to you?

Excuse my ignorance but what's TP and MBP?

Oobster it looks like that wouldn't be compatible for me. I have a 400D and a review I just read says it's only good for the 40D etc.

Can't see why it wouldn't be compatible. I own a 400D and I had the 17-85mm on my DSLR. The only reason I don't use it is because I ended up buying a 28-135mm IS USM on eBay to give me a little extra reach.
