I have just got back home to find strange spots of damp circling around the toilet in the carpet about 15-20cm away from the base of the throne.

I looks like the water is coming up through the carpet but cannot for the life of me see where there is a leak or anything.

The strange thing is they are localised spots, some large, some small and around these spots it is bone dry......

My letting agency is closed at the minute hence me asking here.

Any ideas where else I should be looking?

Cheers guys!
Ian

Is the water level in the pan dropping? Might be a crack in the porcelain, or more likely a leak where the pan connects to the waste - do you have access to check that?

Could be cracked drainpipe if it runs under your house.

Think I may have found the source of the problem.... the back part of the toilet one of the screws has rusted a lot and looks like the seal has perished causing it to leak..... oh joy

Someone leaned on the cistern causing it to move? There's only a certain amount of flexibility, go beyond that and something gives.

bks frown its only a tiny hairline crack though. is it possible to drain the cistern and seal it with sealant?

Might be but you'll need to make sure it's bone dry.

Tie the ball up, flush it, sponge/mop/suck the remaining water out. shout MAKE SURE IT'S BONE DRY!! (Silicone won't seal if wet). Slap on loads of silicone around the joining bolts (cistern to bowl) and the crack. Allow to dry overnight, cross fingers, adopt 'it-was-like-that-when-I-got-here' face.

Plumbers Mate. Horrible stuff to use but will work better than silicone and no need to leave it 24 hours to dry.

It's very unusual for porcelain to crack without impact, but I had a situation once where THREE cisterns of the same design in one house did just that. Odd.
Trent Waverley, for the record.

My parents were woken up one night about 30 years ago by a cistern going bang.
