I seem to be struggling with a colour issue. Photo taken at Goodwood has great reds;

But when uploaded to Facebook looked a bit ropey;

Emailed the original file uploaded to FB to a friend who confirmed the original was good so I dismissed the problem as a FB issue.

But then I loaded the same image as a screensaver and the reds have lost their colour on my monitor! It cannot be a monitor issue as the original file on the same screen has vibrant reds. Any ideas?

TIA

Mark

It doesn't seem to want to embed a FB image but if you click on the red cross it takes you there

The pic up there ^ looks shoddy...

Click through it a couple of times to get to the original uploaded version and it's a lot better...

I'd hazard a guess at a resizing/compression issue...

could be an rgb/srgb issue, what software are you using for converting your images from the camera?

It's your metadata. The images that look wrong have no metadata - specifically, there's no ICC profile embedded - but the one that looks OK does have an ICC profile (Kodak CMM). The ones without are being interpreted as sRGB, which is why the colours look wrong.

Many thanks Major B. I use Lightroom and this is the first time this has occurred – photos uploaded to FB only a couple of days prior were ok – so I must have ticked a box accidentally. The camera is a Minolta 7D rather than a Kodak so I will have a poke around in the options boxes and see what I have done.

Orange rather than red on my screen. Both the Thumbsnap and Facebook images look the same. So I tend to agree that it looks like a colour misinterpretation somewhere.

I haven't spotted any Exif data so far - as a matter of interest what was the camera used?

ETA: Oops - cross posted - question answered above.

The problem seems to be the colour space exporting from Lightroom. I must have disturbed it as it was set to ProPhoto RGB. So this should look grubby;

The other two settings are sRGB (too much?);

And Adobe RGB;

Which looks best?

if ur uploading to web, stick with srgb profiles. you might also need to calibrate your monitor.

in either case, the colours look washed out and could do with some post processing...

The 2nd one is the most vibrant and at a guess is probably the closest to how it looked in reality?

2nd for me.

You'll probably get some boring git saying they prefer no. 3, but don't listen to them.

It depends what application your viewing the photo in. Most web browsers are not colour managed or use the srgb colour space. Therefore, srgb photo would give the most accurate representation.

same image withh srgb profile and some levels and curves adjustments for you. This should now look good even if you upload to FB.

Many thanks for taking the time to tweek that one kman but I think my monitor may need adjustment/calibration!

On my screen your image looks dark and over processed – behind the car looks black and everything is lost. I cannot see the difference between the edge of the tyre and the shadow of the wheelarch so I might need to buy one of those gizmos to calibrate my screen!

Am I alone on this? How do the two images compare for everyone?

The second version has the right colours IMHO; the poster may have tweaked the contrast as well. The red is breaking up but that's repeated JPG compression.

But do make sure your monitor is calibrated (brightness/contrast as well as colour) otherwise you're running up a down escalator from the outset.
