I'm going to Oxford tomorrow and would like to visit Cherwell Boathouse, University College at Christ Church, the Ashmolean Museum and St John's College. I'll be going to Frilford Heath after. Is it better to use the park and ride or park in the city? Thanks smile

I'd P&R it, to be honest. Parking in Oxford CC is difficult enough, but combining that with the traffic and the one-way systems / pedestrianised areas just means its not worth the aggro to drive. And the sites you want to see are dotted all over the city centre, so its not like parking nearby will save you any leg-work once you get there.

I'd drive into the Boathouse, and then park in the car park at the bottom of St Clements and walk into town from there, then drive back out to Frilford Heath (albeit that's pretty much the opposite side of town).

Timing is key in Oxford - avoid am/pm rushes like the plague!

Do you mean 'and', not 'at'? You know Univ and Christ Church are two different colleges?

Anyway, would always recommend using the P&R - its cheaper and much less hassle than finding a space in town. All of your destinations are central and a short walk between each of them, with the exception of the Cherwell Boathouse, which is only a five minute bus ride from the centre up Banbury Road and then a ten minute walk.

if you use the seacourt (botley road) park and ride you'll be on the correct side of town to get to frilford heath afterwards..

...but Cherwell Boathouse will be a pain if it's the first stop. Maybe drive to here and then straight out to Seacourt rather than my original plan to go to St Clements. Again, timings would help us give better advice to OP.

Plus Seacourt is a pain in the ar*e to get in on the bus from. Would suggest that Pear Tree is a better bet - far quicker down Woodstock Road, get off half way down to walk over to the Cherwell BH and when you go back in the evening, its not too far around the ring road to the A420.

So, OP, what we're saying is:

Drive into Oxford, or not.

Use the Park and Ride, or not.

The North Park & Ride is best, unless you prefer East or West.

Oxford's like that if you're a motorist! hehe

Thanks for the great advice so far. I'd like to go to Cherwell Boathouse at around 10.30AM and the rest after that.

In which case I'd definitely drive to the Boathouse. I'd still be advising you to park in St Clements. From there, take a leisurely walk across Christ Church meadows to Christ Church and then walk into town and do your other two locations.

If you can get away from St Clements by say 4pm you'll be OK (Don't attempt to drive up High St, BTW - cameras and fines await!). If not, take your time and leave for Frilford at say 6pm.

Others may/will differ!

That's just weird. I have never seen Christ Church referred to as 'University College at Christ Church', but then I see they refer to every other college as 'University College at X' on that website. Typical muppetry from Oxford City Council rolleyes

If you get lost, just ask for Christ Church college, if you ask for 'University College at Christ Church' you are likely to be directed to University College which is somewhere entirely different.

Guys, thanks for the great advice. Bonefish Blues, I followed your instructions, it worked out perfectly and we had a wonderful time. If you're visiting Oxford and driving, Sherwood is a great place to stay.

An illustration, if there ever was one, that it's wise to check the dates of a thread before posting hehe

How did you even find this?!

No worries. In fairness, it's still useful advice!
