Which games console?

Okay so my oldest boy has started showing an interest in video games. He has not yet directly asked for a games console, but I can see it coming.
I am someone for whom "games" means scrabble, draughts or maybe a nice bit of cribbage.
So, can anyone tell me please what games console I should buy? Needs to be easy to use with plenty of driving games available. Price not so much an issue, longevity more important.

The PS3 will potentially have greater longevity but as the saying goes, the PS3 has no games. You're actually right in the middle of a console generation but there should be about 3 to 5 years left.
In my experience most people, especially kids, tend to have the cheaper X Box. As above it'd be an advantage for him to have the same as his friends and with the XBox you've got Forza as opposed to the mythical GT5 on the PS3.
Last thing, there's a new version of the XBox out, more angular than the previous versions. Don't get gipped with the old version.

As an aside I think GT5 WILL actually ship this year as Sony spunked quite a lot of money up the wall promoting it at the Le Mans 24hr race this year. This chunk of the marketing budget was quite clear on it launching in 2010. Of course they didn't give a date so... December 31st anyone?

I've not believed any of the hype before now about the release dates, but watching the interviews they seem very confident and i actually believe it will happen this time.
And as much as I kinda hope Forza pisses all over it, i think GT5 will be the better game by far <can't believe I've just said that>
Also, i reckon once GT is out the public lobby's on forza will be all but empty.
My kids (12 & 14) have a Wii, XBox, PS2 and two PS3s. (This is my living out my teenage fantasies through my kids). It's the PS3s that get the most use. The Wii isn't even plugged in. The XBox only gets turned on from time to time, it's the PS3 that is the mainstay - which is why we have two.

The Lego series of games are good for that age group too (esp Lego batman) and Little Big Planet on the PS3 is fantastic fun.

My view its down to the Wii or the Nintendo DS. I think he is too young for the DS as its a hand held thing which kids can end up playing too much in isolation. The Wii has many family games you can play together or with friends on the TV, and the controllers are easy for a 4 your old. get him (and you) Mario Carts and any of the young kids games based on the TV programmes he enjoys.
