Evening all,

Well, I found a screw poking out of my month-old tyres (typical....) so I've put the 'special spare' on until a new tyre can be fitted.

The spare wheel has the yellow sticker warning me not to exceed 50mph. However it's a full size wheel (steel, not alloy like the others), and from what I can tell, a normal tyre (Bridgestone Turanza ER300), in the same size as my other tyres.

Now, I'm going to follow the advice on the sticker, but I'm just wondering why it's limiting me to 50mph?

Could it just be because in a roadside change, people can't torque the nuts correctly?

hmmm.. normally its only the really thin spare wheels that you are supposed to keep below a certain speed

Currently got a space saver on my 206, it says 80mph max. I've done 105 as confirmed by sat nav, no problems..... yet!

Normally very low speed ratings are reserved for space savers. Having seen the results of a space saver de laminating, you wont catch me exceeding the stated speed on it!

This full size spare, have you checked the speed rating on it? It will be on the end of the tyre size ie 185/55R16*W etc. If the rating is a normal one and the wheel is a normal steel wheel, drive accordingly.

Are you sure it's not 80kmh rated?

You know those space savers are supposed to be a temporary solution until you can get the normal wheel complete with new tyre back on?

I do hope you're trolling because if not you're a reckless idiot.

On some cars, you do get a full sized tyre, but it still has a 50mph max sticker on it. The best way to judge is look at what the speed rating on the tyre says.

it will be a diffrent weight and so will cause vibration as it wont be balenced with the others, could cause interesting wear on the other tyres or handling at speed! As to the kn*b with the 206 when the tyre does let go I hope it is just you that gets hurt and not some poor sod in the wrong place at the wrong time!

D'oh, that would've been the obvious thing to do.... Will check in the morning.

Doing over a ton on a spacesaver though, surely unwise!

Should make for an interesting insurance claim though - "I wrote off my 206 whilst travelling at 105mph on a temporary 50mph tyre. . . . . . ."

Sounds like a darwin award candidate to me.

ah... ten mile tyres

probably a safety precaution as most spares end up sitting in the boot for years and going bad.

My mate had a Metro 1.1 back in the day...

Every tyre was like a space saver, down a hill he got it upto 115, when he tried to brake I've never been so scared in my life. laugh, hill + metro brakes = FAIL

When we did finally stop the brakes were visably red hot laugh

So you...

a) Can't read properly, because it says 80kph NOT 80mph
b) Exceed the highest speed limit in the country by a 50% margin
c) Tell everyone about it on an open forum...

Wheels are all balanced individually and the balance of one wheel has no affect on the balance of the others other than sending vibrations across an axle. A wheel is either balanced or it isn't. The only effect of a different weight wheel may be to cause a little 'torque steer' when accelerating. In any other situation the difference in weight wouldn't be noticeable.

Sometimes spare tyres are a different compound to normal every-day tyres, as they are designed to last a long time with little use without perishing. This may be the reason it's only rated at 50mph.

Sorry to resurrect a long dead thread.
I've just read a claim that makes the 105mph in this thread seem a bit trivial smile
So, apart from pointing out the last original post seems to be completely missing the 'balanced' point, I've just read a post on another forum where someone says they did 160mph on an autobahn in a 300ZX with a skinny on the front.
That's by far the fastest I've heard one used so thought it was worth posting up.
