Have prices gone up?
Discussion
I've been keeping half an eye on the TVR classifieds (notice my old S3 has just gone up again: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1783927.htm) and, particularly in regard to the Griffith and Chimaera, the prices seem to have gone up quite a bit in the past six months. In the grip of TVR-withdrawl I thought about shopping around for a Chim at the beginning of the year and I could swear you were struggling to find one over £10,000 back then. Now it seems to be relatively common.
So what do you reckon? Is it just summer prices kicking in, am I simply being paranoid, or are they genuinely rising?
Chris

There was quite a bit of discussion on this subject a while ago (I'll se if I can find a link and edit it in) on the Griff forum. The general consensus was that yes there does seem to be a slight rise in values (Griff initially but I'm sure Chimps are following suit.
Could be for many reasons, dealers increasing prices, coverage in the motoring press (The Times newspaper etc) and speculation that Griffs are a good bet on an investment in years to come along with a certain gentleman buying a Griff and praising it to extremes (actually comparing it to his Zonda !! )

Yep, on a completely selfish level, my heart sank when my final copy of Sprint came through and I saw Harry Metcalfe had bought one. I had rather hoped to get back into ownership while I could still afford it!
It's great to see TVR getting that sort of endorsement though and I hope it continues to work out well.

The rarer a car becomes the more it goes up in value IMHO. All TVRs are a rare breed to start with so I can only see them increasing over the years. For evidence, try buying a MK1 or MKII Escort that you would be lucky to get for £100 ten years ago!
Unless something terrible has happened they're not that much rarer than they were in January, surely?I do get your point, but I flirted with the idea of picking up a Chimaera over the winter and I'm sure most were under £10k - could swear it was only very smart examples and/or 500s that were significantly into the teens, with a reasonable number cirvca £8k. Now the starting point appears to be about £9k, with plenty over £15k. That was smart Griffith 500 territory last time I looked.
When I do come back - assuming my finances won't stretch to a T350 - it'll be a Chimaera of some description I think (that or a V8S) so those are the models I've browsed from time to time.
Chris watching the classified I think they have picked back up to the level they were at 3 years ago before Northern Rock came to haunt us all. Some of this I suspect will be the summer roof off phenomenon and some just natural recovery as people get spare cash for fun as the economy starts to recover and supply and demand comes back into play. As OPs have said small supply & increasing demand = increasing price, but I can't see any of them going through the roof for a good 10 or more years yet and even then IMHO there are probably enough Chims to allow them to lag behind the S series (slightly - and particularly the V8S) and the Griffs (massively) given the others two's slightly rarer and/or more unique styling.
I emphasise this is not knocking the Chim as I really like them, but they were the best selling model at the time (for good reason) and hence there are more about.
All IMHO of course
Mark
ETA: I didn't mention any later cars as I think you are in a different league with the Cerbera and Tuscan onwards

I've got one of the rare unofficial Mk3 Tuscan S's, 07 plate.
A year ago I was offered around £21K for it from dealers, which I obviously didn't accept.
I got offered £34K a month ago and didn't accept.
Now dealers have them advertised at > £37K
Fingers crossed I can keep the mileage down.

I understand dealers are struggling at the moment to get stock... very few for sale at the moment, obviously a seasonal thing..but I heard TVR dealers are buying other makes just because they can't get hold of TVRs. Supply and Demand will obviously affect the price. I'll be holding on to my two and still thinking about a third

I monitor T350 prices ever few months or so.....they are going up.
Looking at Junes PH offering the average mileages and prices (includes both private and trade) are as follows:
2003 avge miles = 23,700 and avge price = £19,700
2004 avge miles 22,000 and avge price = £22,500 The 2004 average mileages are slighlty low as one car has 4,560 miles on the clock only.
It's interesting that for a 2003 car, the June averages of trade car prices vs private sale prices shows the avge trade price = £19,650 and avge private price is = £19,900.
When you do the same for 2004 cars the avge trade price = £24,070 and the avge private sale price = £19,915
I know averages don't provide a full picture, just more of an indication and a bit of food for thought for those that are selling or thinking of selling. But overall prices are going up month on month.
Cheers. BB.

Talking about this to a mate who is in the classic car trade (and whichever way you look at it, our TVR's are all in that market rather than mainstream).
He has seen an across the board price rise in classic cars, but mainly for the very best examples i.e. low mileage, nut and bolt restorations, few owners, rarity etc. More mediocre examples aren't seeing suchg a rise.
He also reckoned good TVR's will rise on the basis that a) they aren't being made now b) they have a certain cachet/image/mystique c) they were never made in huge numbers and d)the write off/damage rate is still quite high vs. other classic marques i.e. they are still new enough to be used more regularly, so therefore becoming more rare.
On the way out, I left 50m worth of tyre marks down his drive to show how I am looking after my 4L asset

I would quite like to have a gallardo as well, for the record
Wouldn't we all!
I've always regretted selling mine with my heart, looks like I'm starting to regret it with my head now too. Maybe (with the rises we're seeing) I won't be returning to Tiv ownership any time soon after all.
