Are these congressmen really this naive and stupid?

Or is it really all just theatre and bluster?

They each speak for about 10 minutes and don't ask any questions!

They seem even more dim than our MPS!

I am incredibly impressed with Hayward's patience.

They honestly expect the CEO to know the daily details on every rig they have in operation? Are they that naive about how large business management structures work?

I wish Tony would ridicule their ignorance just a bit more....

When you combine the two it's just terrible.

Its not a hearing or an investigation.

Its a blame throwing exercise where a bunch of politicos throw st at someone who has already been condemned to death regardless of his answers or responses.

The yanks hate BP because its not theirs. They are blustering in order to make themselves look good in front of the electorate.

Its pointless, serves no purpose and is frankly embarrassing and maddening to listen to in equal measure.

Tony Hayward is a brave chap to try and take it on but nothing he says or does will make a jot of difference.

These panels make a big impression on the people who have to vote in a few years time for their next relection ...

The official investigation is not released yet but ignore that whilst the sun is shining and political hay has to made.

TH doesn't need to resign. But I do wish he'd give them a bit of needle:

Odd, slight dim congressman:

"blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Well Mr Hayward?

TH:

Do you have a question?

They can fk BP in the ass with sandpaper all they want, but the federal government and the MMS (regulator) have to take some responsibility. The GOM is a federal waterway after all.

I very much doubt that Obama's reaction to this would have been the same if BP had been an American company, and that is what makes the way his administration have handled this so outrageous. It is bully at its lowest level, and it is about time Cameron earned his stripes and spoke up for Britain, rather than appearing to be a bit "excuse me, sir" about it all.

In what way?

He has no need to answer their questions - what few there are.

This is no court of law - just a circus. The least he says the better, as the litigators on the other teams will be using anything he says here on record.

It's the way Browne ran BP. TH is a BP lifer.

I agree but he's still an embarrassment. Too many gaffs and gives the wrong vibe.

BP really dropped the ball on the PR front.

Strikes me that the congressmen are simply just competing with each other as to who has the best sound byte.

It's a load of bks really. I'd love to see TH lose his rag with them.

If I were an American reckon I'd be embarrassed about the way some of these people are carrying on.

If I were Hayward, and am ever so grateful I'm not reckon by now I'd have used the line, "As I was saying when I was so rudely interrupted..."

But then I'm no diplomat.

I'm afraid its just the way its done. They did the same to various bank bosses.

The process appears to be

1. Identify problem
2. Apportion blame
3. Use media to convince nation of guilt
4. Haul in front of congressional panel and berate
5. Establish fact
