Well I finally managed to get out on it today...

This is the first time I've ridden a road bike since I was about 10 (I'm 35...) and I managed to get clipped in without binning it OK. Headed out onto the main road and was instantly aware/impressed/nervous at how direct/agile things felt. Obviously massively different to my Msisle but I didn't feel too out of my depth.

Probably wasn't the wisest idea to head straight out onto a NSL S/C but managed to avoid being run over for the initial mile or so. Despite a slight detour onto the grass at one point. Ahem hehe
I adjusted my road position and moved a foot or so further out to ensure this didn't happen again.

The SRAM gearchange was intuitive so no issues there, which was good. Nothing fell off or broke so I can't complain about the Halfords setup, another plus point smile

I found my hands got pretty sore but will put this down to getting used to the different bars. My feet, especially the right, got a bit sore/cramped so I loosened my shoes a little which eased it a bit. Assume things will improve, again, with more riding.

I was using Cyclemeter on the iPhone and ended up with the following:

Started: 17 Jun 2010 11:47:02
Ride Time: 47:52
Stopped Time: 4:10
Distance: 12.22 miles
Average: 15.32 miles/hr
Fastest Speed: 40.29 miles/hr
Climb: 761 feet

I'm pretty happy with that. I worked last night and went bed about 0600 this morning, up at 0900, so don't think that's too shabby?

I'll definitely be getting a Garmin 500 as, good though Cyclemeter is, I want something stem mounted so I can see the stats while I'm riding.

Looking forward to another, shorter, ride later with Gretch. Think I might hit the pool for an hour now...

I use an iPhone RAM mount so I can see the map, compass or stats pages. With all iPhone GPS apps, battery life is no more than 2 hours though. Can even make and receive calls in speaker mode whilst riding!

A Garmin 705 is the way to go, especially if you want cadence and HR inputs.

I thought that! They should add the write up to their ads!

Yeah, had seen that RAM mount. Looks good, thanks.

Have just ordered an Edge 500 bundle in the black/white as I've decided I don't need the extra features of the 705 and I like the idea of a dedicated device... I'll carry on using Cyclemeter too, in my pocket, as I like the Facebook/email updates!

Picked up my Team Carbon last night. It's so much bike for the money. The quality of the frame construction is superb. You need to do a good job to make an exposed carbon frame and that's exactly what they've done.

I spent 10 minutes stripping it of bell and reflectors and it was ready to go. I only up and down my road a couple of times and even though I have ridden my wife's one once last year, I had forgotton how good they are. It feels so stiff yet so light.

The brakes feel good already but the gears, oh how nice are double tap Srams!

The Pro must be another leap beyond the Team but I couldn't justify the extra for recreational riding. For a keen club rider it must be the weapon of choice.

Tell her you can do a paper round in 15 minutes... which will pay for it in no time?

Or... just put it in the garage and don't tell her. When she eventually says "is that new?", you say "No Darling, I have had this one for ages".

It works on me every time, so it must work on them.

hehe How many times have I used that one! You'd think it would be starting to wear a bit thin now, but doesn't seem to be hehe

If your hands are hurting it could be you are putting to much weigh on them.
Get some gloves but also try to make sure you aren't putting too much weight through them.

Also if you've got cleats try them at different positions, they are adjustable for a reason.

It could all just be down to lack of time on the bike, but it's worth looking out for these things
Thing is, he forgets to mention the 140kgs he'll have just bench pressed...

shouldn't make any difference.
It's more to do with the sustained pressure than the kind of strain benching would put on them.

smile
Cheers Swerni, appreciate the input.

I've got gloves, wouldn't ride without TBH. I'm pretty sure it's just a case of me getting used to the bike... I went out for a shorter ride with Gretch the same evening and my hands were much better. Still had a slight pain in my right foot but, again, think I can manage it with a slight adjustment.

I took the bike to Velomotion in MK prior to riding it so the setup is spot on, just needs me to get used to it now! It was a fair amount to take in, what with it being the first time clipped in etc. but I felt much better on the second ride.
