We don't need any of this crap, so please don't buy it! If we vote with our feet, they aren't going to have the sales they're looking for.
Celine Dion sucks anyway!

Agreed, she does suck!

My mother likes her though, so I have downloaded the album off Audiogalaxy.

Well, I happen to like her. Nice person, fantastic voice, and gives plenty of money to charity.

What's interesting is that I wouldn't have thought of buying it anyway because I'd never heard of it but, since you've brought it to my attention, I now know about it and, as a result, am statistically more likely to buy it!

What I'm driving at in a roundabout way is that this is why you're less likely to see unfavourable product reviews in most magazines: don't bring a crap product to people's attention in the first place and they're less likely to pay attention to it (unless it's a big brand that's on people's shortlists anyway).

Not sure if you guys have heard about the new higher fidelity formats coming out - SACD (super audio c d) and DVD-A. The old war between Sony and Philips is looming again. Both new formats promise much higher fidelity than persent cd's, although both will have a code embedded in them to make copying or transferring of the data in any way impossible.

My dream is nearly complete, they only have to make her CD's not play on normal Hi-Fi and Car players and they have done it!

Now where have we heard that one before eh?
Thats like a red rag to a bull, telling every hacker in town that something is secure

Having heard SACD, IMHO there is a slight improvement but given that most people are happy with their 28k MP3's and can't tell the difference between this and CD anyway, I can't see it catching on in the mainstream anytime soon, at least on merit anyway..

Haha, thats funny, saying that something can not be hacked. They can and will find a way around it. As for the quality, you will notice (especially if you have a good quality set of seperates and/or a good ICE system in your mota) that CDs are very variable in quality. There will likely be little difference between a high quality normal CD recording and one on SACD. A lot also comes down to the quality of the CD player thats being used. I wish they would just concentrate on making existing CDs decent quality. I might not have such a problem about buying CDs if they were reasonable quality to start with.

All this sounds pretty useless to me. Surely some hacker will find a way to crack the support and put the disc on the internet for everyone to download... To me, it is just a matter of days rather than months...

This DRM issue has been around for ages, its being fought on many levels but the most succesful is still retailers refusing to stock CD's with DRM on them (Virgin over the Natalie Imbruglia algbum for example).

Interesting point about CD's being differing quality though. All CD's of a run are mastered off one tape written 98% of the time on Sony CD Mastering Machines. All the CD's in one run, usually about 40,000 will use the same media so in theory should be the same quality as digital images dont degrade, they work or they dont.

The only difference in quality can be down the the media as all CD's on a label are mastered in one Factory. However, when it comes to music recording the book standard spreads the frequency so at a given point on the CD the sound at a specific hertz is on or off. Typically though MP3 is helluva a lot worse quality as people rip for speed and size not quality as a lot of people rip from CD's for use on portable MP3 players where you cant notice the difference and then consequently share them.

As for SCD and DVD-A the former is not that great a difference, about the same as a gold CD or using one of the stability bands you can get to put around the edge of CD's. DVD-A on the other hand is 16 channel DSP musical bliss. It will place the sound where it is supposed to go so if you are listening to a live album it will place the artificial echo on the rear speakers first etc like Pro Logic or DTS. It really is worth a listen but as they players are so damned expensive (£3K for a good one, and way out of my league) its quite a way away for general consumption yet.

plotloss, I agree with what you said there, but you should surely be able to play DVD-A in any normal DVD player, my parents have a Sony DVD player, and it lists DVD-A as one of its compatible media.

plotloss regarding quality the limiting factor in all cases will be the source material. If you've got a cheaply recorded badly mixed album, doesn't matter how good a quality the cd production quality is, it just copies the crap quality source material.

Still it's whether the tunes are any good at the end of the day, quality comes second. And on this point I find Celine Dion distinctly lacking personally..

Pbirkett, yep DVD-A will play on any DVD but as the sound is 16 channel (I think) on DVD-A you will lose 10 or 11 channels depending on your decoder set up. For it to work properly with the full compliment of channels I believe you need a DVD-A player.

Mr Tony - yeah that was somewhat of an ommision from my previous statement!

As for Celine Dion dont even begin to get me started on that warbling, big nosed, dreadful dreadful woman.

Why prevent playing on computers? Since there are plenty of Hi-Fi CD re-writers available, will they code the CD to prevent it playing on hi-fi as well
? Rather defeats the object of the disc, although, as mentioned, not being able to hear Celine Dion in any format would not really trouble me. George Thoroughgood, hmmm, that's different.....

Nubbin,

The DRM solutions that have been placed on CD's are to do with intentional errors being embedded in the CD. Most Hi-Fi CD players have error correction routines for playing but these dont appear on computers, Hi-Fi writers or even some old CD players. The reason for this is a copy routine makes an exact digital replica of the CD and doesnt read the music stream off the disc and re-write it.

So presumably the next generation of software rippers will need to perform some kind of transform algorithm on the datastream before converting it to MP3?

Thinking about it, if you connected the digital out of yor Hi-Fi CD player to the digital in of your high-end soundcard, wouldn't you then be able to record a corrected datastream and convert that to MP3?

Trunnions! (Just to get things back on topic )

Yeah thats the sort of thing that the fella who cracked the DeCSS algorithms on DVD's did.

Also, the recording of an audio stream from a hi-fi via a sound card as a WAV file and then converting it into MP3's works fine
