EUROPEAN BREAKDOWN COVER
Discussion
RAC has a good service including an allowance for a hire car to carry on your holiday while the car is being repaired, and a full recovery if it can't be, also RAC recovery membership will also come back to you in the morning after dropping you off at home or hotel of outside working hours to take it to the garage much better than AA who I have been with since 1990 who drop the car off and its up to you to arrange delivery to garage in the morning
For a previous French trip, we'd upgraded our Norwich Union breakdown (with RAC) to European cover for a paltry extra £25ish. Totally got our money's worth. We broke down on the autoroute outside Boulogne and ended up with a hire car for the weekend. Then had a variety of low loaders to get the car back from there to near Kings Lynn.
AA better than RAC as RAC hire car has to be left on continent and you will be left to carry the contents of your car back to UK on ferry. Be aware that any damage caused to your car after it is recovered abroad and before the recovery company collects and transports it to the UK is not covered.
I can whole heartedly recommend RAC. It cost me £48 to top up my UK cover with Europe Zone 1 cover for 7 days and Im very glad I did!
On the second day of my driving holiday to southern France it became obvious that a prolonged high speed 'test' had seen off the head gasket on my Tuscan S. The RAC sent out a low loader and taxi'd me to the nearest rental car place. I had a brand new Opel Ashtray diesel to continue my holiday with at no extra cost. My Tuscan was delivered to TVR Power last Monday via a covered transporter within 14 days of making arrangements for repatriation.
I have yet to see whether the Tuscan is in the same condition as to what I left it in, but fingers crossed all is well
You are supposed to carry the V5 documents with you when in France and the RAC/French recovery people wanted mine. I was apprehensive enough handing the keys over to a French bloke who did not speak a word of English let alone handing him the V5 as well.
I didn't have my V5 with me and that didn't pose a problem in the end.
I hope Dom can get around to looking at the head gasket soon, because I'm moving to Oz in August and I'd like to put a few more miles under the Tuscan's belt before I have to sell

Does anyone know if ADAC provide you with a hire car to continue with your journey after a breakdown, if you have had to get the car recovered back to the uk?
The first time I had to ask them to get my Tuscan back to the UK they gave me a hire car which I had for a week. The second time they offered but I didnt need one. I dont know what limitations on use but I cant remember them stressing any "can't does".
