Is there any disadvantages to driving the front wheel like this? I can imagine that when loaded that traction becomes an issue, but apart from that it seems like a quite sensible layout.

It's a common layout in recumbents. Mike Burrows (of compact frame design fame) did a low racer in that layout. The other week, I went and tried out some recumbents (thinking about getting a Bacchetta ATT 26), and whilst I was there, I tried a Voss Bevo, which was front wheel drive. Apparently you can loose traction on wet hill starts, but on a flat road on a dry day, it just felt like a rwd bike, which surprised me. I don't know how much it restricts turning circle, but recumbents aren't know for their low-speed ability anyway.
