Do I really need a Sports Exhaust on my 111s?
Discussion
I've bought a S2, 111s, but haven't actually collected the car yet. It has a standard exhaust and sounds ok (I believe they put a little flap in the exhaust as standard). I've heard loads of people say if you have an elise you must have a sports exhaust, but is this really true on the 111s?
The car is going to be used as a toy and I'm wandering is it really worth an extra £400 odd for the exhaust and an increase in insurance
Your thoughts are appreciated
Cheers

Ok, I know this is an exige s and not a 111s, but this is the quality of soundtrack you get from larini:

Yes to changing the exhaust. I put the Bell and Colville system on mine as I didn't want the Larini esque style of banging on over run and extra noise, just a system that made it sound like a sportscar, as it will not give any more power ( but to be honest the standard system is crap after seeing one cut open, it must breathe so much better without it) also, you loose about 10 kgs in weight. This piccie shows the standard , a quicksilver, which was crap and did not fit and badly made, don't buy one and the two can Bell and Colvill which went straight on.

Cheers Guy's for the replies. I think I may regret not going for the exhaust. To have a car that looks the part, drives the part, but doesn't sound the part!!
I was looking at Bell And Colvill, that's where I have bought the car from. How do their exhausts compare with Larini?
Also, I take it elise-shop is the place to get it from?
Cheers

Just to be contrary... I think it's worth going through the decision process in three phases...
1. Try the car for a while and see if it already sounds OK to you. If it doesn't....
2. Fit an induction kit and repeat above test... if it doesn't sound OK still...
3. Buy a sports exhaust.
Personally after adding a hurricane induction kit to my 111s I am absolutely satisfied with the amount/type of noise my car now makes, pleased with the cheapness of the solution... and happy still to be able to hear conversations when I get out of the car.

I have fitted a couple of Larinis and they were a 'bit' more of a fiddle to set up than the Bell and Colvill system. Just has another clamp to set up and adjust. B+C just fitted right first time. Larini has more of a rasp to it, although the B+C does bark a bit.I was looking at Bell And Colvill, that's where I have bought the car from. How do their exhausts compare with Larini?

Hmm, the tail pipes on that B&C look the same as mine (albeit cleaner), I've never known what make mine is.
This was just after I fitted it. I painted out the inside with black exhaust paint and the outside now has a bronze ish finish to it.Edited by kambites on Monday 7th June 21:41

Guy's thanks for all your replies. I think it's inevitable that I get one. It's just to decide which one to get, B&C or Larini? Justin, do you have any clips of your B&C in action?
cheers
I used to run a Larini on my S1 111s and was very pleased with it - very few pop and bangs. Also a good friend has just fitted a Larini to his S2 111s and again he is very pleased as he wanted the 'sportscar' sound rather than the boy-racer sound.cheers

I cannot see any of the images above at work, but I couldn't work out which exhaust I had either ... I used this wiki for more information: http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Exhaust_silencers_for_Elis...Edited by kambites on Monday 7th June 21:41
Adrian Blyth stated that my exhaust system was a B&C, but it turns out it is actually a Hayward & Scott. I wonder if H&S supplied/supply exhausts for B&C?
I love the sound of mine
Really deep, throaty roar that changes in character across the rev range - Since it has now been decatted I also get a few pops on gear change and over run, as well as being a lot louder! However the increase in noise isn't hugely noticeable in the cabin with the windows up ... I use mine as a daily drive and can happily cruise down the motorway without the need for ear defenders
If you live nearby to High Wycombe, I'd be happy to show you the Hayward & Scott/B&C system ... Otherwise I'll see if I can create a movie for you. Alternatively, there are lots of vids on Youtube showcasing different exhaust systems.
I can't decide whether to bother with my 111R. I don't really like the noise it makes as standard, but I don't particularly want more cruising noise in the cabin or to annoy my neighbours, and I wonder just how much of a silk purse can be made out of a four cylinder sow's ear. Some of the videos sound really good, but I guess I need to hear some in person - I didn't decide to change the exhaust on my RX-8 until I heard a few at an owners club meet and convinced myself that they didn't sound too Barry-ish.
