After 3 weeks on the CCCUK website, my C5 was delivered to its new owner today and the cash is lanquishing in my bank account. (I must be slipping as it only took 3 days to sell my C4). Anyway, my next Vette will be a Yellow Convertible, probably from Germany.
Has anyone any experience of importing from Germany as regards UK duty on both new or used cars. Obviously I will check it out with the Customs but any thoughts are welcome.
Thanks Nige for your comments on the phone tonight. Has the esteemed Blackzr (Guru of all things Corvette) any views?
I think I know how to register it and I should be ok as regards warranty in the UK.

Well done, that sounds like a result. The only question now is whether to go for that yellow C5 or hang out for a C6.....

I've been severely tempted to think C6 by some of the recent photo's posted, but
1. Went up to Wandsworth yesterday passing 16 "enforcement" cameras on the 40 mile round trip journey.
2. Had Bib behind me today - at a good distance but nonetheless on the prowl.

May just stick with the C5, or chop it in for a Smart Roadster (NOT)! MoT in a couple of weeks so fingers crossed that Crownhill's work on the handbrake still does the necessary. Can't believe I've had this car 5 years now.

As far as I know there shouldn't be any!! The common market and all that, if it's from within the EC, so long as the applicable VAT and duty has been paid in the country of arrival, then there's no further charges...

Hi richard, when i bought mine there was no import duty, i seem to remember the car as to be 6 months or newer for charges,just go to germany and drive it back.good luck.

Hi Richard, that explains why you weren't there on Sunday! Great day out around Brighton, made very welcome by the TVR's, kept up the good name of vettes with a lot of noise, and smoking tyres!

Steve, your comments are exactly what I would have hoped for but alas...... From what I have ascertained so far there is no vat or import duty on a used car ("used" as defined by HMC&E by the way). On a new car, VAT is paid at 16% in Germany and 17.5% in the UK before you can register the car. There is no import duty which I suppose is good news. I am trying to find out if I can either avoid or claim back the German VAT as the UK VAT seems to se set in tablets of stone. Unless anyone knows different .....

The other issue is who you buy it from. If it has not been brought into Europe by the proper GM channels (and you need to prove it), GM will not honour the warranty. I also spoke to BM who confirmed this. I asked BM about servicing and who to use in order not to invalidate any warranty and they said they have a list of who they will authorise to do the servicing. I did not bother to ask who was on the list.

BTW Heather, sorry I missed Sunday - the buyer wouldn't let me take the car out. Glad you had a good time. You were even mentioned in the postings so you obviously made your presence known!!!!

Hi Rich,

If you tell the dealer you are taking to car directly out of the country you shouldn't have to pay German VAT.
In Belgium you have to apply to get a form to fill in to exempt you from Belgium VAT. I assume the same applies in germany. Talk to your dealer!

Nige - how wise you are. You are correct. The info in my previous post was as advised by good old HMC&E this morning!!!
However, since then, a very nice German dealer has now found me a car and offered to do the paperwork so that I can get the German tax refunded.
The question now is do I opt for BSMs??? The answer is probably yes as the Germans seem big on them. C'est la vie..............

Hairdryer and dental floss (I kid you not) are all that is required to remove BSMs (allegedly).

Remember you can get a new Corvette Z06 for $43000 in the States. A base Vette is as little as $37000 without any options.

Wayne. A new Vette from the US for about £30k on the road is an absolute bargain - prices are being heavily discounted already in advance of the C6 and it appears that any new C5s already in GM Europe's stocks are the last ones. I have weighed it up and will probably still buy from Europe. Warranty is important to me as is getting the car asap (I've been without Vette for two days already). At the moment I prefer the C5 in appearance to the C6, so I'm happy to go for a C5 for now and take my chances as regards C5 prices dropping or otherwise.

Well I'm a step closer to buying my Z06.

Sod's law was in operation and all the 2002 Z06's I had lined up sold like condoms at a safe sex gang bang. Two were sold from under my nose before a deal could be finalised.

So I've found a 2001 Z06 in the colour of my choice - red - and it's $3000 cheaper than an 02 so less import duty and VAT and the figures aren't so different anyway. This one has 11000 miles on the clock and is in mint condition. Let's just say it'll be £10000 cheaper than if I bought one of the two on Auto Trader.

One thing I will say about the American cars is that they are invariably low mileage, usually garaged and pampered. Average mileage seems to be about 5000 miles a year.

Good to see you finally got one.

You have to remember the 2001 has the 385BHP not the 405BHP engine of the later model Z06.

Look forward to seeing another Z in the UK.

That's right, go on, rub it in!

Yes, I know it has 385bhp but I just can't find an 02 in my price range that doesn't sell instantly. I'm also working on the theory that although the 02 had a higher lift cam and exhaust mods, one of the reasons it makes more power is a better intake so by fitting a Vararam intake, the power should increase to nearer 400bhp and fitting a ripper shifter will take a fraction of a second out of the 2-3 shift thus propelling me into the low 9's ...well mid to high 12's anyway. I've read some stuff about the 01's being capable of running in the 11's with some carefully selected mods.

However, subject to the exchange rate, I may sell this one and go back for a later one if I can't cope with 405bhp owners constantly belittling me in public. LOL.
