Auto Box issues...Help

Anyone know what is happening here.

107 500SL when after coasting in Drive I put my foot on the gas again the engine revs up and I have no drive then suddenly the gearbox wakes up and bangs into gear again.

Anyone know what the issue could be or is it a gearbox out job and in which case is that engine out?

Hows the fluid level? Does the fluid smell burnt?

The fluid it a good red colour and smells freah as a daisy.

I'm hoping it's something external as all changes between gears is good and solid it just kinda flicks out of top
