James (Jamherber on SELOC) has put a hell of a lot of effort into securing exclusive use of Llandow circuit in South Wales on the 7 August at a great price of around £75 per car for the day.

Unfortunately numbers are falling a bit short and he is struggling to get the last few places filled. If you've not been to Llandow it's a great little circuit, quite technical and a lot of fun. The track organisers are very friendly but still professional and best of all, no noise metering!!!!!

It's a great first track day, helmet hire is available and there are plenty of people to offer advice and pax laps. As said, the price is per CAR, not driver. So two people can share a car for the same price. Not seen the format for the day but normally sessioned in the morning by experience and then open pit in the afternoon.

With a maximum of 40 cars there should be no big queues or waiting around and even if you do have to wait ten minutes there is a cafe on site.

Have done this one twice and it's a good day. Just make sure you bring sun cream!

If you're not on SELOC and want to sign up contact me and I'll help facilitate accordingly.

The last and only time I did Llandow cost me well more than a thousand quid… in the Noble, very heavy rain (and Llandow drainage is poor unless it's been refurbished recently - lots of big lakes of standing water to completely bugger the cut-slick crew), plus a sceptical 'friend' who thought I was a flash cock for having a flashy car (§), I was pushing as hard as I dared. Braking hard for the chicane on the back straight, the back wheels locked (no ABS, early-ish M12 so still 'in development' really) and the car snapped sideways. I caught it and flicked it back the other way to *just* make the chicane (to onlookers, it looked like a scandinavian flick and pure coolness biggrin , but the reality was the opposite - I was very, very lucky because it was instinctive reaction, in no way intentional, just desperate to keep the car pointing the way I wanted to go) but caught the serrated kerbs marking the apexes of the chicane. This put a nice bend in the front driver's side wheel, instant loss of air in the tyre, and I ended up with my bright blue Noble returning all the way from Wales to Kent on the back of an AA flat-be. New wheel and tyre cost a LOT.

So no great memories of Llandow - the pit straight surface was appalling and bumpy back then, but they may have refurbished the track by now. However, whilst my last visit was disastrous, it's a nice technical track and not a 'power' circuit, I'd love to drive it in the dry in the Exige. But if it's wet, and it's wet a LOT in Wales, my enjoyment would be ruined by fear since I'd have the A048Rs on, and they don't like standing water… at all.

Do we have to commit this far in advance? I would love to go but due to my work I simply can't plan days out two months away frown

§ this chap drove a flip-paint TVR Chimaera… he had Peter Wheeler (god bless him) get his dog to 'design' a hole in the roof panel to accommodate the chip on his shoulder...

  • Hopefully* August weather will be kind! Some of the SELOC guys did a day between Xmas and New Year, snow, ice the whole lot. Very brave.
Personally I didn't find the surface at Llandow any worse than most airfields. The most notable section for me being the right hand side at the end of the straight which is bumpy enough to activate the ABS on some cars. Not ideal as you end up moving off line to avoid it.

This is a book and pay now day. I think there are literally a few days to go to get it finalised.

Okey cokey - bit of a bummer as I'd like to go back to banish the memories, but I can't book that far ahead right now so I'll have to pass frown
