Morning all,

In August myself and Mrs MoJo are driving to France (via a Ferry crossing) for 10 days. I am trying to find the best deal on single trip Euro breakdown cover. The price differences are amazing.

I currently have AA cover for the Griff and Audi as specific cars. I will be changing to an any car policy at renewal time in August, and have had a single trip quote from them of a little over £60 for the 10 days or £85 with parts cover too.

RAC have quoted me £68,
Green flag are £95,
then there is http://www.vehicle-rescue.com/european-breakdown-b... who have quoted me £24.75. This seems a little 'too good to be true' and I've not heard of them.

So my question is, who do the PH collective recommend and has anyone had any experience of Vehicle Rescue Direct ?

Cheers smile

I've never broken down, except when covered by Mazda's pan-EU cover, so can't comment on who is good or not.

BUT there has been a tale on PH where someone was stung because his T&Cs stated in the small print that he had to ring and warn them before he travelled abroad.

Cheers Puggit,
I've already advised the ins co as to the dates so thats all covered. Just trying to sort out breakdown cover for the 10 days now. Obviously the Breakdown company (which ever I use) will know the dates as I'm only taking 'single trip' cover for the specific 10 days.

Just need to find the best company/cover/price now !!

I have used Direct Line in the past. They have not been the cheapest, nor the most expensive.

I have not had to claim so cannot say how good the service they offer is.

I've always gone for the AA Eurocover when I've taken a car over.

Only needed it the once, but certainly was worth it, to cut a long story short(ish):

gearbox went u/s when we were stopping on an autoroute for lunch (penultimate day of holiday)

once we got through to the AA (after being taken by a local recovery out of the back of the services back to his garage)

They sorted out:
Making sure he was happy he'd get his fee or whatever for the tow off the autoroute
a hire car to travel the rest of our way back to the ferry
a taxi to get across to the garage we could pick up the hire car
for our car to return home a week or two later when they sent a transporter round picking up the stranded

oh...

and a taxi waiting for us in Portsmouth to take us home from arriving as foot passengers since we had to leave the hire car in Caen (so also paid for the taxi to get back from dropping the hire car in town to get to the ferry).

I think we even got a refund from the ferry company for not bringing the car back cool

all arrangements being dealt with in language of choice (so French for the recovery guy and English for us)

Interesting thing was the guy that picked us off the autoroute services was an agent for RAC but not AA but was quite tickled by the little booklet the AA gave out with a huge list of car bits and problems in about 4 languages, so we left him a copy.

Overall: would recommend it every time thumbup

Green Flag through a reseller for single-trip cover would be much cheaper than buying direct. In general the AA/RAC cover is more expensive although I think the recovery networks are the same in some countries.

Just check the cover limits and T&Cs for the additional cover are similar. The cheaper cover will often want to send you by bus/train to your destination and leave your car to be repaired and then have you come back to pick it up, rather than giving you a hire car. Also for example if you broke down on the way home they might put you up locally while it's repaired rather than tow you the rest of the way home.
