Out for a quick ride tonight, nice 10 miler just to stretch the legs and I noticed the chain slipping a little. Now thinking about either removing a link or replacing the chain. Probably the first as replacing the Decathlon cheapie for a Trek.

Most really don't know how to do the basics so I know after tonight I don't know much so found a coulpe of good sites to give help.

Thought this could be a good place for hints and tips of looking after our bikes.

Will start with chains

When you say "slipping" what do you actually feel happening? Is it jumping around between gears? If so then it doesn't need a new chain, just to have the rear mech to be adjusted. Try the little barrel adjuster on the rear mech to start with, tightening it a few turns. That might help. Also worth checking for any stiff links - a chain might jump around if one of the links isn't able to move freely.

A chain shouldn't stretch so much that it starts to slip - it's likely to be another cause.

Cheers Stuart, think 'slipping' is the wrong word, feels like any tension in the chain disappears for a second or two. Will see if a tighten up as you've suggested helps cure it.

also could be worn cassette or front chainrings.
