Yes. The rules say you're allowed an overhang of a certain amount forward of the centreline of the front wheels. If your chosen body shape doesn't overhang by that much, adding an extension to make it up to the legal limit so that you break the beams at the top end that fraction of a second sooner might be the difference between winning and losing.
The FIA said:
Normally aspirated, gasoline, nitrous oxide injection or methanol with nitrous oxide injection. Maximum 900 cubic-inch displacement (14,748 cm3), 2,350 pounds (1,065.9 kg) minimum weight.
Body model older than year 1959 may deduct 25 pounds (11.3 kg) from minimum weight.
Body model newer than year 2000 must add 25 pounds (11.3 kg) to minimum weight.
Supercharged, methanol. Maximum 527 cubic-inch displacement (8,636 cm3), 2,650 pounds (1,202 kg) minimum weight.
Turbo charged are limited to 650 cubic inches (10,651.5 cm3) minimum weight 2,650 pounds (1,202 kg).
