As title - I just want a lightweight bit of software to download images off my memory card. I want them to be put into folders in a directory according to the date when they were shot. I then want the software to automatically empty the card once all the images are downloaded. I don't need the software to do anything else beyond this point.

Please recommend me some free software to do this!

Cheers

The software that comes with canons can do this.

Software?

Copy and/paste the images on the card to a folder in your computer. Sort them by date thus: 'View > Arrange icons by > Date taken on'. Then Ctrl/A to select all the images on the card and hit 'delete'.

I want one folder per date.

You can create several folders, name them by date and transfer image files accordingly, but I agree it is several steps.

Pretty much any automated process can also be done manually. I had a bit of software with my last canon camera which did all this for me. I just want those same functions again.

So, what was the Canon software called (as I can't remember) and where can I get it, or something like it? (Was it 'camerawindow' or something equally weird?)

Really? You don't format the card within the camera? That's the fastest way to get file/card corruption...

I do, but the OP merely said he wanted to 'empty the card'. Formatting is also quicker, despatching 4Gb in 2-3 secs. I don't know any software that does it automatically nuts

I take photos from several different cameras and rename all individual photos to include the date and a sequence number, based on the camera, and I use this - which does the job really well -

Iphoto and apeture will import and automatically split the photos into one event per day. Best way of deleting memory ard is to stick it back into camera and format I thought.

Camerawindow is the one that pops up, it possibly opens something else to do the actual downloading though.

I use a folder for year with a folder inside for each month and a folder in there for each day, works well and done with no hassle.

Photo Mechanic is very good at this. It is not free, but is by far the fastest and most efficient way of downloading from card, sorting, captioning and editing large numbers of photos that I have ever used.
