I read this story on my phone yesterday.

Shocking, I believe there was another old dear injured (Broken arm?) on the bus. Is there such a charge as causing death by dangerous cycling? Or would it be straight up manslaughter? The picture I have seen makes it look like the young chav on the bike was causing the bus to brake heavily on purpose.

I've seen people do similar to mobile library vehicles. Apparently makes a bit of a mess of the books.

ETA - It does look like the cyclist is on a pelican crossing (Silver studs across the road) I do wander if the lights were at red or green, Given the cyclists appearence I would hazard a guess that the bus had right of way.

It looks like those studded red strips of tarmac are down the road at 30/40 yard intervals. What does that mean? (I hardly ever drive in city centres thank god).

Don't know if that's the exact location but there's a red studded strip there so you get a good look at what the cyclist was on.

Looks like he was on a crossing.

From the picture it looks like he *might* have just been taken by surprise?

I would imagine very, very hard to prove an malicious intent. There is a "furious cycling" charge and that gets used now and again when cyclists mow down pedestrians, but don't know if there's a careless cycling option.

Cyclists are not allowed to ride across crossings.

Oh come off it!

However much of a chav he may or may not look in a grainy phone picture, pulling out in front of a bus in no way equates to manslaughter.

If he'd been driving an Aston and swerved then everyone would be saying good, one less bus passenger draining the benefits system and probably burgling houses.

It was a 78 year old woman who died. The camera photo was probably taken by the front mounted security camera as fitted by most bus operators.

If a car driver caused a death of a bus passenger by dicking around on the roads then I'm sure it would get the same response as the cyclist. Being wreckless for a laugh and costing someone, anyones life is a tttish thing to do.

Yes but causing a bus driver to brake doesn't necassarily mean he was being a tt for fun, and a bus braking, even sharply does not mean that passengers will die.

It sounds to me like a very unfortunate incident with no reason to believe any malice or wrecklessness was involved.

Of course it doesnt mean people will die, and of course it was very unfortunate, almost a 'freak' accident.

But, as someone else pointed out, cycles are not permitted to use pedestrain crossings, his 'stance' looks rather rude boy, as if he has popped a skid to make the bus brake hard on purpose.

Looks like a good old game of 'Chicken'

He's blatantly just fking about.

Even a quadra-spaz knows to look before crossing a road, he obviously saw the bus and decided to play silly bks.

Obviously, we can only see a still image, I think the full recording would be rather telling, although it would probably never be released.

Blown up like that he does look a bit of a ne're do well. His bike is too small, which is usually a sign of a chav.

What fking planet are you people on?

BMX bikes are standard sized. You ride the same size from age 10 to 50+

His outfit is hardly chav either, not a hint of tracksuit, lacoste trainers or gold bling in sight.

Honest to christ, what do you expect of today's youth? Penny farthings, top hats and tails?

He looks like he's been riding along in his own world probably listening to his iPod, seen a bus about to flatten him at the last minute is is trying a swift reversal to avoid it. Notice his feet on the ground and front wheel in the air like he's trying to yank the bike round as quickly as possible?

It's not even as if he's got his feet on the pedals to get out of the way quickly if necessary. If he deliberately let the bus get close enough that it had to do an emergency stop and he had no escape plan then he must be astonishingly stupid (possible, I suppose).

The little prick has probably just realised the prank nearly cost him his own life. Unfortunately it didn't.

However it does highlight a problem - I was on a bus once that had to do an emergency stop and was thrown half the length of the bus and (fortunately) bounced off a rear facing seat which has a very padded cushion - I bounced off it with my head. That was in the old days when bus seats were big bouncy cushions, these days with the ample plastic and poles I would probably have died from head injuries.

Lets face it, sometimes vehicles have to stop in a big hurry, its unavoidable - if you're on a bus at the time this could be a very big issue as you're not necessarily sitting and certainly not restrained. I recall seeing several news stories lately of bus crashes and multiple deaths being involved. I'm surprised our "health and safety" masters haven't insisted all buses have seatbelts and no-one stands.

Yes, but the point I think the previous poster was making (because it's the same point that crossed my mind as soon as I saw the photo) is that typically the only time you see adults riding BMX's (outside of BMX competitions etc.) or other undersized bikes is when the adult in question looks a bit dodgy, or is behaving a bit dodgily, or is in some way giving the impression of being up to absolutely no good whatsoever.

Now maybe, just maybe, the rider in that photo really is a fine upstanding member of society who just happens to use a BMX as their everyday ride, but IME the balance of probabilities suggests otherwise.
