Did anyone see the CEO of the DVLA on Watchdog this week? He was defending the mistakes that they make. I just wondered if anyone knew who they supply their data to.

Has anyone on here requested a list of organisations that have access to the DVLA under the Freedom of Information Act?

Watchdog as usual missed the best question for DVLA. (This is what annoys me about Watchdog as the researchers are just rubbish).

Why do you have to SORN your car every year?

Why can't you SORN it once (like in the past) and that be it until you put it back on the road?

Could it be that a percentage of people get caught out and sent an automatic fine?

I currently have a SORN car and so does my brother. I've not had to do it again each year as I've had it for 2 years now and no issues.

Is this some secret thing that nobody knows about and I'm about to get rogered?

You have to renew your SORN annually. Remember that, technically, the DVLA don't need to remind you, so you'd best get on to their website and renew it asap.

Re: Having to re-SORN annually - it's a simple thing to do, so not really a huge bother is it.

Where else in life you do have to annually tell someone that you haven't started doing something?

I think the previous poster just made my point to be honest. It's something that can easily be overlooked and you get a fine for having done nothing wrong.

Think about it for a moment - you get a fine for doing nothing wrong - you haven't used it on the road, you haven't driven without an MOT, you haven't driven without insurance, and you've kept it off the road - and you get a fine for not remembering to inform them that the vehicle is still off the road.

So regardless of how easy it is to re-register it as SORN, having to do it yearly is nothing more than catching a percentage of people and automating an income stream.

Blimey, just confirmed it on the DVLA site. How long has that been the case then? Will have to sort it out after work.

I would be interested to know how many SORN reminders fail to be delivered each year. Whilst the DVLA argue there is no obligation to provide one, I wonder how many people remember to SORN?
