Anyone got this? Is it an improvement and if not, which of the later versions of C&C are worth getting? I already have RA2

I had a lot of fun playing C&C: Generals.

You can pick it up with the expansion pack for about a fiver now too, well worth a punt at that price even if its not as good as I remember.

I loved Generals, and the Zero Hour pack for it. Shame that they stopped doing that line as IMHO everything they have released since has been pretty poor.

Reason for asking is I was busy installing C&C4 after getting it off a mate who said he didn't like it. There appears to be no skirmish mode of old where you can build huge bases, you have to select Offence, Defence or Support and build vehicles to take over command points....

Where has the good old base building gone? I might go and get Generals.

And you can hardly zoom out so it feels claustraphobic

Don't want to hijack the thread but if anyone fancies a game on zero hour PM me can't do today though.

I was tempted to buy it, but the uber-draconian DRM "you must be connected to the internet to play, even single player - or else we're cutting you off and not letting you play at all" took the piss a little too much...

It's the same reason why I returned Spore (draconian DRM) without opening it, and the same reason I tread very carefully when choosing PC over Console games...

DRM is killing PC gaming imo, not piracy (but that's a whole other subject for a whole other thread!)

Reading the EA forums and the beta test threads it seems it's just a game of capturing and holding control nodes and then spamming out units more quickly than the opposition to capture their nodes. Unfortunately this also applies to single player.

Seems like they've ripped the soul from the game and a huge part of the tactical gameplay.

Even though this is from a multiplayer related discussion this quote from a beta tester seems to best explain the changes.

beta tester said:
yes but how did you destroy the enemy base this is where the strategy came in

in the older games you had key things you could harrass on the opponents side of the battle and the same things on your side to try and come out on top

with the resource system you harrassed the enemies economy to prevent them from building up as many forces, or slowing down their forces. you destracted them from things, they did it to you. you had to choose when and where to build, what to build, is your current situation good for you to build up some upgrades etc

-with the base mechanic you could attack a persons resource structures, to make their income less efficient
-you could attack power to take out their defences, to slow down their production, to force them to build power or to sell off something important
-you could attack up to 4 different production structures to remove an opponents air units, naval, ground and infantry which changes the gameplay and dynamic of the battlefield
-you could attack a persons tech to stop them from upgrading things, and from building better turrets
-you could in older games attack the radar to disorientate the enemy

on top of all this harrassment and ways to change up the battlefield you yourself had to defend against these things, you had to know what your opponent was doing, think ahead, you had to macro manage and micromanage all at the same time.

in c&c4 you walk to a point, spam infinite units with more qued up then walk to the other point. repeat repeat. theres no way to stop people doing that. you just go back and fourth with your allies making sure you have more of your crawlers than the enemy and you fight with units like you did in the old game, but without the risk of the old game.

gets stale

Agree entirely with the beta tester post above. So much so, I've uninstalled 4 and now got Generals on the go.

Generals is the last great C&C game... Even RA3 was disappointing.

"Building for China!"

I love those helix choppers with miniguns!

I wish they'd make another C&C just like Red Alert 2. That was perfection for C&C IMO. Great playability and endless fun.
