New F1 qualifying - doesn't work ?!
Discussion
Just watched the Melbourne qualifying.
The back to back 1 lap qualifying sessions simple doesn't make interesting TV - what's the point of watching a driver do 1 lap then 2 to 50mins later watch him again ! Qualify session 1 is a parade lap - pointless except for sponsorship TV coverage.
So do yourselves a favour - skip the first 45 mins of qualifying, the teams are saving engines etc - and go straight to the second or the "real" qualifying session.
I'd go back to the old qualifying free for all for the first 25 mins - then a superpole for the top 10 drivers low fuel loads throughout the session.
Must admit I've just watched it on my Sky+ and :-
1) I lost track of who was doing what as cars just seemed to be going round without any real 'feel' for me of in what order etc
2) Biggest issue seemed to be starting from the pits!!
3) Taku & Jenson - top lads with top car
Too early to comment fully but looks more like Saturday's are going to be a bit dull - so god only knows what Friday sessions will be like???

Agreed. It was a rather pointless, 2 hour long affair wasn't it?
A Friday 1 hour long session and a Saturday 1 hour long session, none of the old 12-lap limit nonsense, is what we need.
Take a sum of each driver's Friday best and Saturday best to determine grid position, to ensure that they complete laps on both days, and scrap the '1 engine per weekend' rule so they aren't afraid to complete lots of laps.
It'll be a relief on April 16th, 1st MotoGP qually session of the year, all the bikes out on track for the full hour. Only 6 more weeks to wait.
