I'm guessing that next year these 2 options will fall into my price range of £27K and having owned an early 996 wondered which option would best suit most fun, relatively low useage (6000 miles), preferably low depreciation and likely long term ownership.

Thanks

996 for me please. But then I'm odd and even prefer the interior.

I had the same issue this time last year albeit a 997 C2 or 996 Turbo at £32k - £35k. For me there was no question - I drove both and got out of the 997 with a smile on my face but out of the 996 Turbo positively giddy, bordering on delrium. Drive both and I think you'll agree. Also, depreciation-wise the Turbo will be a much better prospect even with the higher running costs if you plan to run it for a few years and the money is a big factor.

Are you really expecting that much of a drop.... The prices have a way to go to be there (well, except for the low end extreme)

Delirium sounds good!

On the expectant prices front, I'm hoping a mixture of private sale, higher mileage and depth of winter might help, but guessing really.

very excited

If purity of throttle response and the engine note are important to you, go for the 997 C2S (and a general feeling of modernity).

If all-round competence and straight line shove are more important (though it's no slouch in the corners either), go for the 996 Turbo.

If truth be told, whilst I find my turbo to be the most competent all-round sports car I've ever owned, I don't love it. It doesn't help that it's a non-X50 tip, but I suspect the chassis needs true nutter power and a manual box to make it dance. In stock form, I find it a little inert, though I have been spoiled by driving other (more raw) cars. That said, it has an amazing block and its all-round excellence makes it a lot of car for the money - probably the biggest bargain on the used car market today.

Because the 996 model is further down its depreciation curve, and the gradients becomes less the further down the curve you are. (but no-one knows for sure).

What are you basing your comment on?

There are plenty of 996 Turbos at £27k, and plenty of 997's for sale with a figure starting with a '2'....

There may be 997's around in the £20k's but I haven't seen any C2S's less than £30k.
For a reasonable mileage 997 C2S they all seem to be £35k+ and For a higher mileage certainly £30k+!
If you can find any examples of reasonable mileage 997 C2S less than £35k please feel free to point me in the right direction!!

Exactly! Also note that I said a better prospect - not better guaranteed.

I'd also not have the engine worries associated with a 997 C2, especially an earlier one at that budget.

You wont get a decent C2S for your budget at the moment.

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like both will deliver, but in differing ways.

I'm leaning towards the 996 turbo but as has been suggested, only driving both will determine.

The turbo will be a bit leggy at the money but not a problem (Bullit proof engine)
Epic drive trust me.
As you said drive both make your choice, i was in the same dilema as you and opted for a turbo more iconic, & very quick with the bullit proof GT1 crank unlike the normally aspirated carreras

As I said, your budget isnt big enough for a C2S by a long way .

There are only 2 997's on PH under 28k in total.

One has done 94,000 miles (and isnt an S), and the other is a Tip S which isnt an S at all. (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1750636.htm)

O/T

Which crank/block does the C4S have?
