Dash Lighting Resistors - is there any point keeping them?

I realised over the weekend that even without the dash resistors connected the lighting still works on its highest setting (dimmer than a dim thing)

So is there any point in refitting them? It seems a dumb place to put them to me just behind the wheel anyway - so am I better off just joining the wires together and taping them in the loom to lose them? Or does anyone have a better suggestion?
