It could well be that I'm just taking a bit more interest than before, but isn't the new coalition actually, well, doing stuff? That's most unlike politicians.

Most new governments do quite a lot in their first year or two after coming to power. Labour "did" a lot in 1997/98 (some of which was quite good). After that they start running out of reforming zeal (just as well sometimes).

I did not think this coalition would work but have been pleasantly surprised by the initial work they've done. Hope it continues.

Agreed with what we have so far.

However, remember that labour went on a massive spending spree thanks to a nice looking balance sheet and for quite some time, Winky carried on the sound fiscal policies of the previous government. It was only when he decided to do things his way that it went tits up.

Labour continued to 'reform' for 13 years. Unfortunately most of it was either not very good and/or badly implemented

So far, let's just hope it continues with good things.

Removed ID cards, scrapped HIPS, pledged to hold a bonfire of Labour legislation.

I've never voted Tory, but will consider it, if they continue to reform and remove most of the useless dumbass legislation we have on the statute books (dangerous dogs, or Dunblane anyone?).
So far so good, as far as I can see?
The proposed reform to allow anonymity for those accused of rape is another step in the right direction as well. Removal of several rafts of non-job civil servants is also a good move IMHO.

Keep it coming !

Might I suggest we drag those able bodied, tracksuit wearing pillars of society, into a job centre, and ask tell them they have 3 months to pick one of the jobs in there. If they haven't accepted one after that time, dole money stopped ?

I believe they've also instituted a long-overdue pruning of the civil service and scrapped a stack of qangos that were taking up government budget for no great reason.

I don't mind suffering a few loony schemes on the motoring side if they're actually doing something elsewhere. At least with this government (so far) you get the vague feeling that the money we're deprived of as motorists might go somewhere almost worthwhile.

I wonder how much money and effort is wasted restructuring the public sector every ten or fifteen years or so as the idealogy of those in charge switches overnight to one that's directly opposed to it's predecessor. It must have cost a lot for Labour to assemble their hoards of minions, now it's going to cost a fortune to get rid of them , and it'll probably cost a fortune again when they reassemble the system in ten or fifteen years, as sadly they almost inevitably will.

They've also committed to getting shot of "Contact Point", of all the legislation and projects put forward by liebore, this would have to be in the top 2 or 3 badly run a spec'd projects, I read one of the tender documents for it a couple of years ago and was left with the overwhelming impression that not only did they not really know what they wanted, but they also didn’t want anybody else to work it out for them!

Without doubt it was one of the biggest wastes of money I've ever seen!

and then what? do you think they will just stay at home and accept their lack of disposable income or do you think they will steal everything that isnt nailed down and sell it for more tracksuits and frozen pizza?

this is the party that told us Britain was broken remember, either they are liars or they greatly misunderstand the psychology of the underclass...

Perhaps if we spent some of the money saved on benefits, on police and prisons, we could thin their numbers that way?

Or shall we just leave things as they are.........?

i'm not saying i have the answer, just that there are a lot of mixed messages around at the moment.

i accept that there are too many people on long term benefits, fair enugh, something must be done about that but stopping their benefits is ridiculous because the mentality of these people would noot, on termination of their benefits be to go and find a job. Please tell me you do not believe anything other than this to be the most likely course of action.

With reference to the comment about police, is this not a section of the inefficent and overspending public sector that are facing £6bn cuts? why would this government announce massive cuts to the public sector only for the master plan to be, in the long term, increasing numbers of police? surely they would gain more support if they announced that little nugget of a policy and the methods of funding it now?
