Stuck 944 cabrio boot lid
Discussion
This info is from a friend who experienced a stuck boot lid on his 1992 944 S2 Cabrio:-
Can anyone "help me get my boot open from the inside!? The wire from the motor has broken / come detached from the lever which opens the latch. Fortunately the back seats were down and I have removed the carpet. But I'm too fat to slide far enough into the boot to get my hand behind the lock. I can see that the hook with adjusting nut is loose, and the wire from the motor is slack. Also I can just see a half inch wide metal 'tag' with a hole in it. Managed to get a spike into said hole - pushed and pulled in every direction but NBG."
He then sorted it himself:-
"The only way in is to remove the two 13 mm nuts that hold the boot lid catch - for which one needs a long handled flat ring spanner - all mine have elbows so I borrowed one from the garage from whom my wife bought her Boxster S.
"Takes forever as you can only turn one 'grove' at a time (you also need to be slim and not suffer from chlosterphobia !!). I then found that the wee ball & socket which links the pull wire to the catch had come un-done which in turn had sprung the bottle screw lever from it's plastic pop clip (which had disappeared, probably through the drain hole under the spare tyre - Porsche Guildford sent me one for free - well it only costs 18p !!).
"In my opinion the double lever motorised wire pull system is somewhat Heath Robinson and unnecessarily complicated. What also surprised me was that none of the Porsche dealers and 'Specialists' I phoned (four in total) had a clue how the system worked !!
"I would be happy for you to post this 'explanation' on the Club Forum website and would be happy to help any other 944 S2 owner (I presume the hard top uses the same system !?) who has the same problem.
"BTW, just in case it happens again, I have attached a pull string to the 'final' lever, through a pulley to a knob inside the cabin so that I can always open it mechanically - something other owners might consider doing now as a precaution !!? "
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers ... Chris.

"One further point, had one of my back seats not been latched I'd have been totally screwed - for even if you drilled out the lock you could not reach the lever !! So my advice would be, either link up a pull cord now, or at least ensure that one of the back seats is not latched at all times !! "
That happened to me as well.Even when i managed to get into the boot, i couldnt move, to lift whatever tools i had already placed in the boot in advance. After several attempts, i reverted to screwdriver in the bootlock & tried to turn it with a pair of molegrips
(what an incredible Fkin stupid set up!).Had to walk away, before i turned into John Cleese. Decided to do a service on car, took it to local indie, then told him while your @ it put me on a new bootlock.DO NOT ATTEMPT, IF YOU EASILY LOSE YOUR PATIENCE!! you have been warned.

Conversely this is a security risk of course - if the hood's down then the boot is accessible by anyone who reaches in and pulls the cord/knob. I'm not saying don't do it, but take everything into consideration before deciding what to do.Ok guys, same problem here. A bit different but I recently acquired this 90 cab. My 2nd s2, this one needs some love which is doable, but this trunk lid deal is really ridiculous. Ok. So the first few days the motor turned, popped up the lid just a bit, enough to work with. Then I hear the motor turn but no release, then no motor sound at all. Motor failure. Fuse id good or possibly bad connection. There's a button near the driver side where the hood release is. But didn't work either from the beginning. Bad connection or something. But I have one of the rear seats down so I've got a thin lengthy friend coming by. Is the only way to physically get back to the lock thru the boot trunk and hopefully release with a screwdriver or tool or something? This is crazy. Bad design, should be able to turn the key or push the key insert to release just in case this happens. I understand there's no other cable because it hard wired all the way back to the lid motor. The cable itself is pretty short. Any suggestions for releasing the lock mechanism??
