Got a knackered built up felt roof on the garage. Considering replacing it with a GRP one rather than felt. More expensive but anyone know any reasons why not. Considering doing a flat roof extension with a GRP too.

I've had three, one in old house and two at my current house. If the structure is sound then they are fairly inexpensive for the length of time they last.

Depends on the condition of the garage, and whether it has adjoining garages with felt or other roof finishes.

Given the lack of info available, I'd be inclined to just get a new felt roof on the garage.

As for the extension? single ply membrane would be my suggestion if it has to have a flat roof.

I looked at that system, very good but it was about twice the cost.

A more cost effective and very DIYable alternative worth looking at is EPDM.

Is it really?

I've only used that on green roofs (flag system) and If it was cheaper than generic single ply stuff surely It would have been recommended on ALL the flat roofs on the project not just the green ones?

As for Sarna etc...yes it costs more, which was why I didn't suggest it for the garage.....just the flat roofed extension.

My father-in-law had one done on his workshop. 4 years before the water pissed in. Unconvinced.

GRP roofs are fine and can last a fair old while - make sure it is correctly insulated and installed over a totally dry surface - ideally all new deck, other wise that litte old condensation and rot fella will come back and bite you - GRP roofs transfer a lot of heat - if you ever been on the inside of a small boat you will know what Im talking about.

Easy enough to do yourself - all the trims can be bought seperate through people like fylon, should cost about £20 per m2 inc new osb deck if you do it yourself

Three years ago i did (DIY)two roofs on my house using info and products from here:

http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/acatalog/CFS_Catalogue__FL...

aftersales was great and the total cost for 55m sq inc all preformed edging profiles was about

1400 quid. It is looking great and shows no sign of degeneration.

Good luck with your project!

Ready to tackle most anything but keep remembering trying to patch car bodywork with mat & getting it stuck all over my fingers/head/infact everything else but where it was supposed to go.

I have a flat roofed garage to do soon. This looks like a fairly simple system to use, even if it maybe doesn't work out as cheap as some. Are there any serious cons?

CFS will put together a project kit for you that includes gloves and acetone to clean the tools (rollers and brushes) and you. Acetone (nail varnish remover) dissolves uncured GRP resin. Once you get into the swing of it, it's not that messy....
