I know it's from that horrid paper, but I thought this might be interesting as a topic biggrin

A mother talked her police friend into staging an arrest on her 5 year old for playing with matches:

What are your thoughts?

Well, frightening him a bit surely beats belting him.

I reckon he'll turn into a pyromaniac as an adult.

Uniformed officer giving him a stern talking to, sure. Handcuffs and in the back of the car?

Probably a bit harsh.

Well done Mum! She was probably sick and tired of telling the kid, to which he just carried on regardless. Fair play to her, a great way to teach him a lesson he won't forget.

Shock tactics can work.

Couldn't she have removed the matches etc from the reach of the child - or even better from the house altogether? Likes her fags too much perhaps?

Because neither of us smoked our two had almost no experience of matches until they came across bunsen burners in the school labs (this was in the days before elf 'n safety paranoia). It wasn't deliberate, it just happened that way.

Her child, nothing illegal about it, trying to do the right thing.

Cue lots of people judging her, despite knowing fk all about her situation.

To elaborate on my first comment, maybe the police should have been arresting her for poor parenting first?

The whole incident will teach the poor kid nothing other than his Mum is dishonest.

Why? Because she wants her child to learn that it is wrong and dangerous to play with matches confused?

Typical liberals coming on this thread raving about "harsh punishments" and over the top behaviour.

Pretty sure that in the olden days (with the cane in schools) kids never, EVER disrespected their techers like they do now.

Shock treatment works - fact. So what if the kid cried? He learnt to not play with matches and probably will never do again. Good on the mother.

People need to learn how to discipline their children - this country (in parts) is a disgrace...

(over-reaction from teacher obviously - but if you read the whole story and background...hardly suprising...)

There's a big difference between teaching a child how to behave and having a friend pretend to be a Police chappy. It might have an effect in the shot-term, but the kid will find out, in fact he'll probably be shown that article at some point and that will completely undermine whatever sense of honesty and trust in his parent that he may or may not have.

Don't call me a liberal, I'm not. If she'd caned him I would have a completely different opinion. It's just that what she did is a lie in itself and it completely undermines the message.

Agreed, I'd say the police took it a too far and are the bad guys here. Its a 5 year old child ffs.

but it would have been fine....if there was not such a media hype about what used to be and (in my opinion still is) a perfectly effective parenting method!

when saying "liberals" i was referring to the comments on the link of the story but should have made that clearer...sorry smile

I'm slightly annoyed there was such a hype about it! And parents lie all the time e.g. dont sit too close to the television your eyes will go square, santa exists.

In one way or another they are white lies to protect/educate/amuse/appease a child's behaviour and are all necessary. I don't remember feeling like my mother was a liar when i found out father christmas wasn't real, or hating my dad when i found out that his favourite lie was "When an ice cream truck sounds the horn its ran out of ice cream" (or was that one a little harsh.... tongue out )

At least she was making an effort to try and do something about the behaviour of her child. Quite the virtue these days.

I had an 'official police caution' for stealing sweets. It seems to me this is a very similar measure. My mother thought the caution was not serious enough at the time, and said i should have been treated more like this kid was!

This kind of thing can work if you catch the kid young enough IMO.
