If you were looking to buy, would it be a positive or a negative?

For example, this house http://tinyurl.com/26jrvtm

Looks nice, but has a massive dome camera hanging from the side of the front elevation.

and round the back, there looks to be a camera covering the area in front of the garage. Mounted on a black pole on the left end of the garage.

Does that say, he's security aware, protects his property and cars, or that he's had problems / issues with vandalism etc.

It wouldn't necessarily put me off, but I'd ask the seller / agent at the outset whether there have been any criminal / antisocial incidents (whether reported to Police or not) that led to the installation.

I'd be more concerned about dealing with someone who has a sword in the living room.

Yep, go to view it, and when they do the old "I'll leave you to have a look around yourself" bit, check under the bed for a baseball bat/guns, if you find them, steer clear.

Do any/most other houses locally have a camera or an alarm box? Often gives an idea of local experience.

Huge positive, as I have bikes in my garage.

I've often thought about doing this myself, not because i live in a rough area, but because pikeys prefer robbing from nicer areas as there's more to steal and they're less likely to get their legs broken if caught.

It put me off a house I was intending to buy.

Very nice village but CCTV around the house and messy/untidy houses opposite.

Living just down the road from there I can't imagine they've had much in the way of antisocial behaviour. Brompton isn't really that sort of place.

Perhaps the owner has something very valuable in the house. Or is a nutter.

The other possibility is that they've been robbed by scrotes from up north, the A1 (and a quick getaway) is only a few hundred yards away.

Not a great location within the village though.....

I'm currently selling the stuff, and we're working with some neighbor hood watch schemes that are installing cameras on their residents properties to monitor certain groups of people (known pikeys).

Also, there isn't anything wrong with being cautious when you have a property. Maybe the house has some sentimental valuables that can't be replaced (hence insurance isn't good enough?).

In my opinion, it would be foolish to discount a house without even asking the question as there are many potential (non-sinister) reasons! And you can always pull down if you move in!

Good luck with the house!

Cheers

It might not be for any particular reason other than geekiness.

I know a number of chaps in my industry (Broadcast TV) who've got all singing, all dancing CCTV systems installed, some of whom have done the installation themselves. These are systems that they can watch remotely on the web, with off-site recording, etc. It's not unusual to find the guys sitting watching their houses, rather than doing any work.

Don't know if it's the wife they are watching (!), but I'm not aware that they live in particularly troubled areas.

Hmmm - could be geekiness, but it would possibly make me look a little closer.

Can't see an obvious intruder alarm system fitted - and sometimes making a noise in a confined area like that would be very useful.

Also, I know that they sometimes build "character" into new builds, but I'm not sure about the "bricked up window" effect - have seen that on a few apartment building near me recently, I guess trying to build "history" into the construction - nice idea, but not sure it works for me.

Annoyingly the thieving scroat type has a tendency to follow the road network to nice quite commuter villages as there are potentially better pickings. So a good alarm system and CCTV may just be a good way of ensuring that the thieving scroat type drives on a shade further before chancing a break in. I'd still ask about the house as if it has been burgled too recently you may get the post insurance payout revisit, after all brand new kit is worth a bit more.

Extra security has to be a good thing.
I would have to put in an offer to include removing those false window cills. I haven't seen them before. Damned ugly.

I'd just ask the question and go from there. I'm in the process of buying a place that needs rewiring, I'm considering putting CCTV in when we do the rewire as the missus gets nervous when she's home alone and I'm working nights.

He is proberbly a drug dealer, a camera of that height will give you a good view of the street to see who is coming or going but a poor angle to see who is robbing you.
