...just wondering what it is like having a motorbike as your only mode of transport (if that is the case), and what sort of things do you have to put up with, apart from the obvious.

I lived with only 2 wheels for 10 years.

Where do you put the shopping?
What about when guests arrive for the weekend? Who picks them up? Who takes them out?
How do you get to that party (and back?)
Will the boss mind me turning up in leather/jeans every morning?
I want to take my mum out somewhere nice (not Box Hill) - how?
What about the cat? Will it die of fear on the pillion for the trip to the vets? (mine didn't - your model may vary)

I ended up buying a winter hack runaraound (928s4), after one too many journeys in fresh snow.

Depends where you live, and where your work/social centre are in relation. If you live in a town/city centre, near shops, amenities, pubs and your place of work, then it's not too much of a problem. Especially if there is good public transport as an option.

I'm definitely a fair weather biker now though...the car takes the brunt of shitty weather and I only get through 4/5000 miles a year on the bike.

I did it for a bit when I first worked for myself, I lived in Portsmouth and worked in Kent ! I commuted every day on a ZZR1100 for a year before buying a fiesta van which I then tended to leave at the factory to enjoy the trip home more!

30K plus per year on two wheels certainly hones the skills as does spinning the back wheel up in the outside lane of the M25 in the pissing rain, arriving at work so wet it takes 3 days to dry your boots out, and having hands so cold bits of skin die and go black !!

I then got older, made more money, realised I liked a bit of comfort in my life, and went racing instead
