Anyone got one of these? I need a good wide lens for astrophotography, I've been using my D50 kit 17-55 until now but want something better. I'd really like Nikon's 14-24 f/2.8 obviously but I'm not going to be able to afford that until next year.

Any views or other recommendations?

Ive got one of these. Had it for ages, barely use it but its usefull on the odd accasion. Loved it on film, liked it on my D1x, less enthused when on the D2x. I think you can see where this is going. Its not bad though and certainly going to be better than a kit lens.

I think I was lucky to get a decent one, Sigmas quality control is worse than terrible. Just remember that if you want to sell it at some point no one will want it and if you splurge on a Nikkor at least you'll be able to sell it and it will retain something resembling monetary value. You pays your money...

YMMV.

ETA- pretty soft wide open (as you would expect) but sharpens up quite nicely as you stop down.
