S Class Buying Tips?

Looking at buying an S320 CDI, 2-3 years old, within the next week or so.
Narrowed my search down to three potentials - what should I look out for when giving the cars the once over? What optional extras are must haves? (So far: Silver, AMG wheels + body styling, SatNav, COMAND, and the dark wood are on my list...)

I assume you'll be getting a full warranty? Check each and every switch and gadget works, every seat adjustment works. Do this with a fine toothcomb. Assume a fix on any single broken item will cost between a few hundred and a thousand - really.

COMAND is always considered a "must have" - however IMO (and it seems to be a widely held opinion) as a satnav it's not a patch on a £100 Tom-Tom.

Get a main dealer to produce the full warranty/service record which will detail every niggle, failure etc on the car. I purchased a 7 series a few years back from a main dealer with 14k miles on the clock. I assumed it would be perfect. Biggest dog I every owned. The warranty record was something like 20 pages long!

I agree, it is utter garbage...Jaguar were putting a system in cars in 2001 thats better than Merc current offering

Exactly. I have it in both my cars and would much rather use a tom-tom. Also ensure the car has bluetooth, not just phone prep which requires either a cradle or bluetooth adaptor
