Hi,

About to complete and move into a house that has been vacant for 3 years.

I think the systems been drained down. So my dad can help me with that. But any tips with firing up the boiler for the first time? Its a Potterton Profile I think.

Thank you,

Simon

what about taking the plugs out and spraying some oil in the bores and turning it over first?

Check the flue for obstructions and make sure it's burning nicely. No big orange flames.
Make sure the system has water in and the pump is free to turn.

I'd be tempted to get a qualified chap in to re-commission it for you.

Better safe than your entire family dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. smile

I'd flush the system a few times. The boiler heat exchanger probably hasn't been drained so it's possible it might have been frozen at some point. Same could apply to any point where water has remained.

It would be quite surprising if the pump still works.

Thank you for the advice. I'm sure I will be back for more in the next few weeks.

By the time this house is finished I will have gone from a newbie to expert DIYer.

Best of luck but would agree with the earlier advice to get a professional to re-commission the boiler - it'll reduce your gas consumption and, if there is a fault, it could save your life.

When you refill the system you'll want to add some inhibitor or your rads and pipe will start corroding from the inside. This may also knacker the boiler eventually.
