A very nicely put together article on MSN - click through them.

Agree?
Disagree?

Even the most rabid anti-labourites here must concede some of the hits were worthwhile!

The Minimum Wage a hit?

A job is worth what someone will do it for.

Lords reform a hit?

The idea is to have an uncorruptable ruling class, you grotty little too large for your boots society lice.

The Smoking Ban a hit?

Yes because the market shouldnt decide, should it?

I'm giving up there. Left wing ste.

Minimum Wage is the biggest load of old bks ever.

How to keep the man down under the pretense of doing them a favour.

Those who support Labour forever bang on about how they were only paid £1.50 an hour back in the 80's under a Tory government, but ignore that when that £1.50 is adjusted for inflation it works out at about £5 in today's money, meaning the minimum wage has actually kept wages low.

It's quite subjective.

He says that the Tories backed the invasion on Iraq, but that was based on Labours information.

I think it's still too early to say that devolution is a hit. It still needs work.

"Despite a hefty amount of criminal justice legislation, Labour also ushered in an equally potent raft of social liberalisation"
Labour were social liberators?!! As if civil partnerships wouldn't have happened under a different government....

I know a few landlords who wouldn't agree with him on the smoking ban.

I'd give the article a Miss.

Civil Liberties? Hit?

confused

What have Labour done for civil liberties other than spy on us more and introduce laws that criminalise every man, woman, dog and child. But because they have allowed weddings for back-ticklers it is a massive achievement?

By and large I agree. My only issue would be with the millenium dome. Ok not a hit straight away but now one of the UKs leading venues.

It starts out by saying it's a rarity for any party to remain in power for more than ten years.

Except for the last two administrations: which together rack up more than thirty years in which it's been the way things work.

So. They then say it will be unlikely we'll wait more than ten years for the administration to change.

Errrm. Not on the current trend. Bit early to make a call on that, I think!

Lords reform a hit. Yes.
"uncorruptable ruling class"... please that's a lot of shit!!

They're as corruptable as the rest of us and most of them have no idea what it's like in the real world.

Smoking ban a hit? Yes. fk the market, we've already seen what trusting the market does for us.

Minimum wage a hit. Yes. People should be payed a fair working wage.

And if the fair working wage for your skills is less than the statutory minimum you don't deserve to work. Is that it?

What about the biggest miss of the lot, the yawning deficit?

Also, civil liberities a hit?! Even Labour supporters must surely admit they are authoritarian.

That's all fine and dandy for people who have either decent education or access to higher paying jobs. I've known a lot of really good and decent people who, for whatever reason, cannot compete with better placed or educated folks, but STILL refuse to be dole scroungers. For those that would rather NOT be sponging on the dole for matters of self respect, but don't have access to better paying work then it's a really good idea.

Or do we simply let the older, or less educated, or less better placed simply remain on the dole for life??

I fecking hate Labour, but they did a good thing there.

The second chamber is just a check on the actions of the Commons.

Who's more corruptible - Baroness Uddin or somebody like the Duke of Montrose?

The whole Milennium project was one of the first things that got peoples backs up about Labour, in particular the subject of government waste. If the dome is a hit now then that's not by design!
I totally agree with the smoking ban, no more red eyes and smelly clothes and a healthier working environment for workers.
If you want to put profit above health then that's saying something about your character. For those that have fallen by the wayside as a result of the ban then I would take a long hard look at your business model as I know of many pubs of all sizes that have suvived and now prosper after the ban. The minimum wage I am not sure about, but I am sure that left unchecked business would get greedy, paying as little as possible and using that to boost their margins. Those that bemoan the notion of earning a decent wage must assume we have a ready supply of worker-beings living in trees who survive on thin air and grass and are willing to work for whatever price as they don't need money. There is nothing I find more absurd than for a person to go out and work full time and still have to rely on benefits and credits to survive. And I don't mean to have a flatscreen TV etc etc.

You know what's wrong with you ultra right wing muppets.

Anyone who is to the left of you is automatically a communist.

You really have no idea do you.

You either fall into one of two camps.

1- your just not very clever and think the world is black and white, Your opinion and communism

2- your using a typical right wing tactic or trying to scare others into thinking that any form or politics that isn't right wing is going to lead us down the road to communism. OMG if we have a minimum wage soon we'll be just like the former Soviet Union...

I know people who earn minimum wage and they work hard for every penny. It might be easy to talk about the market setting wages and all that when you earn a decent wage but those at the bottom tend to be stuck with what they can get. It's not like they have the option of thinking, oh this job doesn't pay enough i'll leave and get a different job. It just isn't that simple.

As long as people perform a usefull role in society they deserve to be paid a fair wage.

There's a good argument for that, as clearly your work is pretty useless smile

But it's the minimum wage that keeps them on the dole. If I calculate that I can make a profit out of employing someone providing I donn't pay them more than £5 and the minimum wage is > £5, then they stay on the dole. If I can pay them £4.99 they get money they would not otherwise have got, I make more profit and my customers get a better service.
