Who has or has tried Toyo R1R or/and Advan AD08's

Hi there

Looking for a new performance tyre for the EVO X and have narrowed it down between two street/track performance tyres.

1. Toyo R1R (140 rating and 6.5mm tread)
2. Advan Neova AD08 (180 rating and 8mm tread)

Both are tyres designed for track and road that also work well in the wet but offer extreme grip in dry/warm conditions.


So has anyone got any experience with these tyres?

Have you considered the Bridgestone RE070? What size tyre are you looking for?

I've used T1Rs and AD07, which the 08 replaces.

The Yoko has a stiffer sidewall, better dry grip, quite progressive breakaway.

They are definitely on the summer tyre side of the fence compared to the T1R, which although a budget tyre is arguably a better all year round option.

Don't want T1R its not a great tyre, OK but lots of better options.

Yeah the AD07 was good but poor in wet/cold which is an area the AD08 is supposed to have been greatly improved.


Anyone actually had R1R's or AD08's who can comment please?

Doubtful you're going to get many reviews for the AD08 given until 2 weeks ago it was limited to 2 sizes(OEM Elise fitment). Ditto R1R, its not exactly a widespread tyre yet.

Did toyo fix whatever problems they were having with the R1R which prevented its release about a year ago?

I always thought it was an interesting tyre, i've used both the R888 and T1R and I think for a lot of people a tyre aimed squarely between the 2 existing tyres could be a winner.

I am looking to buy a pair of tyres in this crossover track/road category, but I think my money will be going on the new Kumho Ecsta XS KU36.

One guy on the EK9 forum has tried them against others like the the Bridgstone RE11, Toyo R1R, Hankook RS2 and Yoko Prada S2 and rates them above all of the competition despite being about £20 cheaper per corner.

Having seen no other reviews I am willing to go in blind on them, quite a few people rate the KU31 as an excellent road tyre so they 'could' be a good bet.

Incorrect - R1R is available here. Demon Tweeks have a few different sizes in stock ( as well as other places )

Only a single person has rated the r1r's so far on TR but seemed to like them (unfortunately no words left, just ratings), same for the Yoko AD08 actually.

From the feed back I've heard, the R1R is a very good tyre but there seems to be a certain halo around the Toyo brand in select communities. The R888 can do no wrong, and if you listened to the Jap boys you can drive on water with the T1r.

I never really hear much about Yoko tyres tbh, which sstill surprises me.

I'll be fitting a set of AD08's to my EVO IX FQ-360 in the near future as I know the sidewall stiffness will be correct for the car. I currently have two sets of wheels, one with the original Yoko A-046's and the other with Goodyear F1's. The F1's with their softer sidewall do not suit the car IMO as there's too much tyre movement under high cornering loads, plus the steering feels less precise. The A-046's feel great in comparison and I expect the AD08's will be a good step up from those.

Sounds about right.

A few guys on the itr-dc2 forum have just fitted AD08's and are very impressed - very stiff sidewalls (which the DC2 needs...since the RE010 was discontinued nothing in the right size has matched-up) and supposed to be fairly progressive too.

To revive this thread. Does anyone have any experience of these tyres, I'm guessing there's no complaints about grip; what I'd like to know though is wear rate. They have a 180 wear rating but any real world experience of them on the road?

I run R1R's on my S1 Exige and can't rate them highly enough. I find the grip not that much lower than 888's or 48's but the wet weather performance much better especially in standing water. I did the petrolheadsnirvana alpine tour earlier this year and the tyres were great in the sun, rain and snow! Even though we were lets saying pushing on the tyres are not even done to the wear markers yet!

I'd still only use 48's or 888's on track but think that R1R's are probably the best road tyre.

This is an old thread and Gibbo has the AD08's now and he likes them IIRC from the MLR forum.

I have the AD08's which replaced the A046's that I had on before.. They are a better tyre than the A046's and better in the wet. They give awesome dry weather grip.

They are a lot quieter than the A046's and give a more weighted steering feel. I only had them on a couple of months before I fitted my winter tyres/wheels in November.

They are the best summer tyre I have had so far for my EVO..

I have tried Good Year F1 assy's (too soft and squishy) even in XL.

A046's great dry grip but a bit hairy in the wet, very stiff side-wall and tended to tram line a bit. Also found them to feel a bit "pointy" on the steering feel.

AD08's as I said best tyre yet.. So much dry grip! wet grip is also pretty good for this type of tyre too.

They do not tram line at all, very precise steering feel, smooth and quiet compared to the other tyres I mentioned.

Highly recommend them..

Thanks for the feedback. I'll most likely go for the AD08s, the only thing that concerns me is longevity, but I'm not buying them to travel around the world. £330 for 4 fitted is also a bonus (195/50/15)
