I've been advertising my beloved for sale recently and recieved this email today.


hello......seller
my name is chris ray,authorised motor dealer(used car).i'm interested in the purshase of your TVR Chimaera.the price is okay with me.I want you to send me the present condition of that car in other for me to send it to my client who will make out the payment with a certified cashier check drawn on usa bank to you.moreso,i will contact my client transporter who will come to your location for the pickup after will have concluded the transaction.meanwhile,you are going to send the following details in other to get the payment;
your full name
fullhome adress
phone number
zip code


It seems to be from America so I'm not too concerned but unless I'm paranoid it looks like an invitation to have my car nicked.
What do you think?

Sounds like a scam but can't figure out what they could do with just your address If they really wanted to nick it they could just phone you up and sound interested, arrange a visit to view and you'd even give then directions nevermind just the address, and I presume your phone numbers in the ad anyway
Just email back telling them to phone you to discuss the transaction

Sounds a bit dodgy. Few scams like that going around, they normally after your bank details.

Plus I would be a bit suspicious of anyone who wants to buy a car without asking anything at all about it.

I advertised a car on a local website once and at one point I was getting 2 or 3 of these a week.

Not quite sure what it is but there is a scam in there somewhere.

Avoid at all costs.

start to get suspicious - a used car dealer that wants to pay the advertised price?

So the client is paying you - what's in it for this guy who claims to be a salesman? Surely he would buy the car, and sell it to the client for profit????

Hi Ted, maybe, I do have it advertised on Pistonheads but also on some other sites, including my own.
It's also going to be in Sprint, so maybe from the TVRCC site.

The ads on the TVRCC site don't get updated until Sprint comes out so the ones shown at the moment are from the Feb issue and nothing there at the moment appears to look like yours so I don't think it can have come from us. If you get an indication that it may have done can you let either me or Paul Calland know.

Cheers Ralph, youre right, my cars not even on the TVRCC site yet so deffinately not from there.
Looking at my site stats there are many hits from google searches etc so probably one of those.

Hi Its definitely a dodgy deal scam, I had a similar
reply to an advert posted on the Norton Motor cycle
club web site just before Christmas. Where the alleged
buyer then send a stolen cheque--I never gave my
address out, thay sent the cheque directly to my bank
account! Lincolnshire police still investigating.
I think this dodgy dealer was from Nigeria.

If you got an email from here it would have a subject line of 'RE: --your car-- at PistonHeads.com'

The originating country of the sender is included as the first line in the email.

I have also have measures in place to filter out many of the scammers automatically.

In that case Ted it didn't come via PistonHeads.
If you want to automatically filter this git though the senders address was [e-mail]
