I just finished downloading one of my cards direct from the camera and so formatted it, but just realised that in doing so I have wiped a load of my partner's .jpeg files. As I shoot RAW on the Nikon and she uses a small compact Digi shooting .jpeg, the Nikon didn't see the files. Is that it? Gone for good..? frown

Of course this wouldn't have happened if the cards didn't get mixed around in the first place... rolleyes

I managed to download some recovery software from Sandisk when I did the same thing to one of my CF cards last year. Took two out together downloaded the pictures from one and then thought i'd format it while I did the other, you can figure the rest out.

It recovered everything from memory including some older pictures from an earlier reformat.

I dont know if the software was exclusive to the manufacturers cards though.

I used my Sandisk recovery software to recover all the photos from my mum's SD non Sandisk card after my 4 year old nephew managed to delete all the images whilst playing around with the menu system.

I'm not sure if he formatted the card or just did a mass delete, but the Sandisk software worked a treat.

I bought CardRecovery and got back all my files. http://www.cardrecovery.com/

DO NOT write any data to the card.

The trial that lets you see your images to check they are there is free.

Hopefully someone will be along with a cheaper option.

I had a dabble with "Recuva" last week, and was quite surprised as to how many files it brought back from a long time ago...

If you haven't written any more data to the card, you should be able to recover most, if not all the pics. (Unless your camera overwrote the ones from your good lady's camera... but it shouldn't have!)

Good luck!

Oh, and link to Recuva - http://www.piriform.com/recuva

I think if you formatted rather then just deleted everything it you will have lost everything and it wont be recoverable. Everyone else seems to think differently though so i may be wrong!

I've had to use the Sandisk software on a couple of occasions: Once on one of their cards and once with a Lexar card. 95% & 100% success rates.

No. You can get stuff back after a format. But only if you act immediately and avoid any data whatsoever being written to the card.

One thing I've learnt, sitting near some "ethical" hackers, is that formattting doesn't actually erase the disk - it merely marks the space as available to be overwritten (waits to be corrected) so if you don't overwrite the "empty" space, it is recoverable.

Good luck smile

Try this software:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

My brother had a memory card fail while he was in China, and I managed to recover everything from it using their testdisk software, so it might be worth a try.

Oh - card recovery seems to be having better luck, come across some .tif files anyway (interesting as I have never taken any). This is rather interesting stuff!

I've just formatted my SD card from within the camera, and Recuva's not picking up any files!

EDIT: Just done a "Deep Scan" of the SD card with Recova and it's found everything that was on there...

It's an 8gb SDHC card, if that makes any difference...

I'm just glad I did this as a test and didn't actually need what was on there!!

Gonna try some of these suggestions though, and save them in my arsenal for when I do need them...

Stumped up the cash for CardRecovery, which got them back but they only appear as very small .TIF files - not much luck yet in achieving a decent quality from them yet. Will continue to mess around...
