Your overtaking experiences - any negative responses?

Quite common on here, the "I overtook someone and blah blah blah" threads.

I and a few others have been known to state that we have never really experienced any negative reaction to our overtaking (perhaps due to a combination of fast car, driving God-ness and general handsomeness), with the commensurate implication that SOME OF YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.

It would be interesting to see how widespread this issue is nowadays.

Perhaps what you drive and where you drive are as much a factor as how you drive. Are things worse oop North/daan Saaath? Is the problem increasing over time?

As always, your thoughts would be most welcome.

Driving the Vito back from London on Saturday, making progress as I wanted to be home sooner rather than later, most cars simply let you overtake, but for some reason the drivers of a Silver Passat, Black Seat Ibiza FR, and a Ratty old Impreza decided they didn't like being overtaken by a van.

Passat and Impreza passed me then slowed down, the passat repeating this 4 times before finally settling down. The Ibiza driver passed me once, slowed and as I pulled out he accelerated again, I moved back to lane 1, He slowed, repeat 3 times until I turned the CC off and passed him, eased back to .9 lepton and he overtook once more this time brake testing me as he pulled in. At this point I was very very tempted to try one of those pitbull moves you seen on American car chase shows but instead I just passed the little tossbag again and he gave up.

Next time I go on a long drive I plan to put a big sign in the rear window with an insulting slogan, at least then I will understand why people feel the need to drive like cockends when overtaken by someone going faster than them.

Most of my overtaking is confined to dual carriageway roads due to my car being a slow bd, I get the occasional driver who must suddenly realise he's going slow (or doesn't like to be overtaken by a piece of tat) who then pulls out to follow me so I move over and he goes past, everyone is happy. The odd driver will then slow down again and I'll simply go past again, repeat until bored, never seen it turn to aggression though.

Depends a lot on the car and the driver you overtake, never had issues in low sporty cars that people expected to be driven quickly (lotus elise etc.) where people would see a sporty car catching up and then expect or often indicate to allow me to pass. Making progress in hot hatches and more standard looking cars can lead to people getting annoyed more as they don't expect you to be overtaking or think you might be sitting too close if you need to have a run up to pass them in something slow. Coming up behind someone to overtake if you have xenon lights at night can make people think you are flashing them as the nose lifts when you overtake, can sometimes lead to them leaving their main beam on after you have overtaken. Always nice to have a faster car to make some distance between you and the numpties on the road when required.

I've overtaken a few in my Golf and had the usual "speed up to close the gap" and flashing lights - but I tend to not get a reaction if I overtake driving the OH's Honda Jazz, usually because I've got a big, stupid, grin on my face as I know that not many people expect them to be driven at speed

you forgot the option where one does not give a fk once the slowe rcar is behind them
or they are usually a small dot by the time I can look in my rearview mirror and I cannot make out any signs of protest if any.

Have had quite quite a few bad experiences all in the boxster and always with the roof down, mostly people trying to aggressively reovertake you which just gives me an opportunity to open up the sports exhaust . Of course there's always a nice cricket bat next to my seat in case anyone decides to play ball

People who are too useless at driving themselves to ever manage an overtake seem to get annoyed when someone actually can do it - and safely.

I think they actually do consider it an affront.

I overtake people fairly regularly in what most would see as a cheap vaguely chavvy 90's Jap car (because that's what it is).

I don't remember ever being beeped or chased or even flashed and always find the stories on here really surprising because it just doesn't happen to me. I'm fairly firmly of the belief that those it does happen to are probably doing something else that makes them look like a cock or provokes such reactions (tailgaiting beforehand etc).

I've experienced it once in many years of driving. And I don't think it was the actual overtake that caused the other driver concern, but the fact that I overtook him when 2 lanes were merging into 1. This despite the fact that I had already gone past him at the "400 metres to go" marker !

I shrugged and carried on.

When I was in Europe people were always flashing me when I was overtaking in the box, I thought maybe my lights were out or something but as you said they just seemed annoyed at being overtaken.
Boxster does seem to bring out the worst in people

If you pass someone and they speed up but you really need to get back in then why not do so and let them sort themselves out, if that means the idiot who sped up has to stamp on their brakes then so be it.

The situation is completely self inflicted, I have no sympathy for them.

Do you not check your mirrors just before pulling back in?

I make sure that I do an over the shoulder check before pulling back in as well as mirror observations, just in case the numpty has decided to boot it.

I don't think I've ever had a hostile reaction to an overtake. In the Rocco, there was often surprise that something so old and rusty could be on the road, let alone overtaking them.

In the 7, it seems to be expected and, occasionally, actively encouraged with drivers actually slowing down and beckoning me past.
