Full frame vs cropped sensor
Discussion
If you're doing mainly fashion and portraits, then you are likely to see some improvement in image quality with the 5DMk1. Don't expect a "massive" improvement though, because what you're using produces decent IQ already.
I often shoot at events with another photographer. Between us we have a 350D, 40D, 5DMk1 and a 1DMk3. I get to process all the images (in Lightroom) so have the opportunity to compare quality side-by-side. I have to say that I'm often hard-pressed to know what cameras the images are from. The main differences are in high-ISO situations or when significant cropping is required prior to printing. Even then, the 350D performs pretty well. All cameras though have L-quality lenses though or the Canon 17-55mm F2.8 (which is reckoned to have L-quality for IQ).
OK, this doesn't help much! If it makes a difference though, I did notice that once I upgraded to the 5D and 40D (and later to the 5D and 1D), other "ordinary" photographers assumed that I must be good because I had the "pro" gear (I am good of course!). That's probably the biggest difference you'll notice at first!

For portraits and fashion in particular a better control of Depth of Field may be another big gain. It certainly should be but there is a chance that individual styles may not require what a shallower DoF offers.Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
