Prop Rep/FPTP Soloution?
Discussion
right, hear me out on this, had it rolling around all day...
currently there are 1.3 million votes wihout a single seat repereseting them, and there is a 6% difference in percentage of votes that equates to a 200 seat difference. this is not good IMHO.
so i propose this blend of FPTP AND PropRep:
You, the electorate vote, as normal for your local MP (who is aparty mmber, as now), you ALSO vote for a national party.
the votes for MP's are counted as usual, as are the "party" votes.
lets use current figures.
the Labour Party have "won" 258 seats in the MP elections, and, if those people also seleced Labour as their national party of choice, they have 29% of the vote.
this natonal vote equates to 188.5 MP's, so Labour would theoretically be allocated the 188 seats that they had the clearest victory in MP votes.
the same with the main 3 parties, which would leave the Conservatives with 234 seats, the Lib Dems with 149 seats, and the "other" parties with 79 seats, working on the same principle, so SNP would have 11 seats, UKIP, 20 seats...
these would be allocated FIRST in the seats where their MP support was strongest, meaning that areas with strong Green support would end up with a Green MP even if they didnt win locally, due to national support.
still needs some tweaks, whats the PH verdict?

So on that basis it's possible that I'll end up with a local MP who is a BNP candidate (for arguments sake) even though they came 6th purely so they can represent their party at westminster due to a national vote percentage, even though 98% of my constituency did not vote for them...
No thanks!

I favour a system whereby constituencies are enlarged to two or three times their current size, but are represented by two or three MPs, those MPs being allocated by PR. If we absolutely have to have PR that is.
I'd be happy if only the constituency sizes were made uniform for starters, because both Conservatives and LibDems are under-represented due to this.
