That's never a "1960's style Biplane". It's one of those wierd Eastern European things.

How Ironic.

Two other threads on this over in the News Forum.

The plane was a PZL 104 Wilga.

Is that a large bomb or a small torpedo underneath?

I reckon it might be a smoke cannister.

Why wasn't the pilot wearing trousers and was it a contributing factor to the crash ? wink

I feel it's justified, especially since I started the thread in the first place.

Thanks for your informed comment by the way.

I think you can see the pilots bare legs and sandals in the picture of Farage in the cockpit before take off.

So it wasn't the removal of trousers that caused the crash. Very pleased to know that.

Just been anounced on BBC, presumably from details obtained from either ther pilot and Farage-

The pilot made FIVE attempts to snag the banner. On the fifth attempt, the pilot misjudged the manoeuver and got the banner caught up around the tail, causing him to lose control and the plane to crash.

He might have been in shorts or his trousers might have come off

Again, I'm astonished they are both alive.

Five attempts to snag the banner AND flying in shorts..... Sounds like that guy was an accident waiting to happen.

I think if I had been the passenger, after the second failed attempt I would have said "just land there please, I'm getting out now to leave you to it".

Actually, I doubt I would have got in to begin with.

Was this the usual case of a pilot turning to try to return to base but with insufficient speed and therefore stalling?

Nice of photographers to get pictures instead of helping.

One paper carried a front page pic this morning. Spotted in the newsagent, not sure which paper and can't find it online now.

It wasn't the Telegraph one linked here and showed Farage's face as he lay on his back.
