Interesting that the Russian tanker had a "panic room" the crew could retreat to and await assistance. Good design.

Very. It wouldn't surprise me if this sort of thing is adopted across the board.

I think the leading point is that all crew were in the safe room. Had the pirates been pointing Ak's at the crew's heads instead, I suspect the Russians may have went about things differently,

From what i've read they mainly use small arms and light vessels, Wouldnt it take a helluva lot of small arms to take down a tanker for zero gain and risk nations navys taking an interest?

yeah, disable ship controls, but leave the engine running, by disengaging an electro magnetic coupler..

once crew is safe in the panic room, electrify the entire hull until rescue arrives !
