Given that:
The driver admitted to guilt early on (despite the scene of the accident quote and the no comment) which would have no impact.
Showed remorse according to defense & judge
and
Was a newly qualified driver;
Taking all that into consideration the judge was still pretty light, although it's difficult to see what a custodial sentence would have achieved, I certainly don't think she should have got away this lightly.
It's a lose lose all-round.

It's a difficult one. I think in accidental death - albeit a case of fairly extreme negligence - the person actually responsible probably won't be rehabilitated that much by being punished. I doubt any normal human being would suffer any more in a modern prison, for example, than they would from having to wake up every morning knowing they'd deprived a child of ever remembering its mother.
I guess making an example of them would make other drivers more likely to sit up and take note, but nobody ever really thinks that turning round to yell at their kids or picking up the phone is likely to result in someone's death. That doesn't excuse it, but what I mean is that normal A-to-B drivers don't see themselves as risk takers. It never crosses their mind that something could go wrong.
Deepest sympathies to the family. Despite what I said above I'd want to see the driver's head on a spike if that was my other half she'd collected. Definitely worth thinking about when you're in the car though - thinking about the implications of getting it wrong give you a renewed respect for blind corners and the like.

Not sure if a custodial sentence would serve any real purpose but 150-hours community service and 'only' a two-year ban is remarkably light.
Perhaps a harder, more comprehensive driving test and regular re-testing to maintain standards would help rid the road of these seemingly unavoidable 'tragic events'. Oh hang on that would impinge the humanrights of incompetent drivers

Just seen this - absolutely shocking, and on a road I've ridden along! Only banned from the road for 2 years and no prison sentence!! 10pence got 12months for injuring a biker for an accident that was accepted by him to be his fault. This woman denied all knowledge and lied about it, then refused to comment and gets 150hours community service. Where is the consistency? It makes me scared to be on the roads on my bike when there are drivers also on it who can be distracted for periods of 20 seconds or more by a passenger talking to them
