Camcorders? Where to start?

Morning all,
The OH's birthday is coming up & the only thing she has said she wants so far is a camcorder.
So she can film her son's birthdays / xmas's / plays etc.
We've also got a little'un on the way so it'd be nice to have for when the baby comes along.
I however have absolutely no idea what's good & what's not good in the camcorder world & what means what with regards to quality, brands, storage etc.
My budget is £200 ideally for that i'd like to get a camcorder & the memory & a case aswell.
I appreciate it's not the biggest budget but it does'nt have to be all singing, all dancing.
I thought about getting her a decent Digi cam with a video function but she's said she'd much prefer a camcorder.
Any recommendations / info much appreciated.
